Lucha Underground S1E21 Recap: Trios Championship Announced

Photo from El Rey Network

On the last episode of Lucha Underground, we saw two big championship matches, where both champions retained their titles in hard-fought battles. The first title match was for the AAA Mega Championship, as Alberto El Patron (currently Alberto Del Rio in WWE) defeated Texano in a Bull Rope match by using an ambreaker over the top rope to keep his title. The main event featured Prince Puma successfully defending his Lucha Underground Championship (which now has a new title belt design) against Cage in a Boyle Heights Street Fight, with the help of Hernandez (the latest Lucha Underground signee) and Prince Puma’s mentor, Konnan. In news unrelated to championships, we also saw Son of Havoc pick up his second victory since debuting in Lucha Underground over Angélico, after dumping his girlfriend, Ivelisse, in the middle of the match.

This recap is part of a series that is recapping the entirety of Lucha Underground. If you would like to catch up on previous recaps, click here for the recap of the last episode. Currently, Lucha Underground airs Wednesdays on El Rey Network, and is now available on iTunes.

Opening Segment
Dario Cueto is in his office, while he is greeted by Big Ryck, who is accompanied by two unfamiliar faces, which we learn to be Killshot and The Mack (also known as Willie Mack in the independent scene). Big Ryck has heard that Cueto put the hit on him a few weeks ago, and before he causes Cueto harm, he is offered an opportunity. Dario Cueto is setting up a tournament to determine the first-ever Lucha Underground Trios Champions, and Killshot and The Mack are entered in that tournament. The tournament will span over four weeks.

Angélico vs. Johnny Mundo
These two competitors are perhaps some of the most uniquely gifted athletes in professional wrestling. Both Angélico and Johnny Mundo has similar styles, with fast-paced moves, as well as a move set focused heavy on kicking. A big difference between Mundo and Angélico is that Angélico might be a little too cocky for his own good, whereas Johnny Mundo has plenty of accolades to justify his confidence.

Johnny Mundo counters a super hurricanrana attempt into a powerbomb, which led to Mundo hitting the End of the World (formerly the Starship Pain in WWE) on Angélico for the win. Winner: Johnny Mundo

Backstage Segment
Dario Cueto is in his office with Sexy Star regarding the tournament for the Lucha Underground Trios Championship. Since Sexy Star’s partners, Mascarita Sagrada and Pimpinela Escarlata, are injured, Cueto gives her two partners: Super Fly and Pentagon Jr.. They will take on Big Ryck, Killshot, and The Mack in the main event.

Aerostar (2) vs. Drago (1) – Best of 5 Series
Over the last few weeks, Aerostar and Drago have had amazing matches in this “Best of 5” series, with the winner being awarded one of Dario Cueto’s “unique opportunites.” Drago has won the first match in the series, but with Aerostar winning two in a row afterwards, Drago needs to give it his all if he wants to stay in this series.

Drago uses a very unique pin, cradling himself around Aerostar’s legs, to win the match, making the next match sudden death. Winner: Drago

Best of 5 Series Update: Aerostar (2), Drago (2)

Backstage Segment
Son of Havoc, Ivelisse, and Angélico are all in Dario Cueto’s office regarding the Trios Tag Team Championship tournament. Even though there is animosity between all three of these luchadores, Dario Cueto makes them a team, and they will be in a tournament match next week.

Big Ryck, The Mack, & Killshot vs. Sexy Star, Super Fly, & Pentagon Jr. – Lucha Underground Trios Championship Tournament Match
Pentagon Jr. is one of the most destructive competitors in Lucha Underground, but it doesn’t mean he will be a good tag team partner for Sexy Star and Super Fly. The last time Pentagon Jr. aligned himself with somebody (Chavo Guerrero), he turned on him a week later. Before the match, Pentagon Jr. calls his partners weak, and says he will win the Trios titles himself.

After Big Ryck isolates Sexy Star and Pentagon Jr., The Mack and Killshot put away Super Fly for the victory. Winners: Big Ryck, The Mack, & Killshot

After the match, Pentagon Jr. looks to break Super Fly’s arm in frustration, but Sexy Star makes the save, ending this episode of Lucha Underground.
