Lucha Underground S2E14 Recap: Cage in a Cage

On the last episode of Lucha Underground, we saw a Trios Championship tournament match, the winner of the second Aztec medallion, and a Lucha Underground Championship contest between two monsters.

The show started off with Drago and Aerostar, who have absolute perfect chemistry in the ring, which goes back to their “Best of 5” series in Season One. There were several close calls in this match, but in the end, the man from the Cosmos, Aerostar, would pick up the victory and the second of seven Aztec medallions.

Last week also featured the final Trios Tournament match before the finals, which saw Fenix leading his teammates (PJ Black and Jack Evans) to victory, getting a surprising win over the Disciples of Death. Tonight, Fenix, PJ Black, and Jack Evans will join the other two victorious teams in the Trios tournament in a fatal four-way elimination Trios match for the Trios Championship.

To main event the evening was Catrina’s monster (Mil Muertes) taking on Dario Cueto’s monster (Matanza Cueto). This match was akin to the Hulk Hogan/Andre the Giant match at WrestleMania III, where the “irresistible force” meets the “immovable object.” As you might expect with a match of this magnitude, it ended in a no contest after Muertes hit the Flatliner on Matanza through the ceiling of Dario Cueto’s office.

Tonight’s episode of Lucha Underground features two huge matches. As mentioned above, four teams will compete for the Trios Championship, currently held by Ivelisse, Son of Havoc, and Angélico. Along with the huge title match is a steel cage match between Johnny Mundo and Cage, where the winner will earn the third Aztec medallion.

Johnny Mundo (w/Taya) vs. Cage – Aztec Medallion Match (Steel Cage)
Johnny Mundo and Cage have been feuding for months now, and this match forces these two competitors to collide. This is in favor of Cage, considering that every time Mundo sees Cage, he tries to run away. What might play in Mundo’s favor, however, is the fact that he has won the only steel cage match in Lucha Underground history.

Cage almost escapes from the Cage, but Taya blocks his escape by hitting him several times with a kendo stick. Now the kendo stick has entered the cage for both men to use. Along with the kendo stick, Taya throws a chair, and herself, into the mix. Taya brings handcuffs into the mix, but Cage uses them against her as he cuffs her to the ropes. After eliminating Taya from the situation, Cage hits a sit-out tombstone piledriver on Mundo onto a chair to pick up the victory and the third Aztec medallion. Winner: Cage

Dario Cueto exits his office to announce some “breaking news” before the Trios tournament match. He announces that Angélico has had some “unfortunate accident,” and will have to be rushed to the hospital. Son of Havoc and Ivelisse will have to defend the titles without a third partner.

Fenix, PJ Black, & Jack Evans vs. Joey Ryan, Mr. Cisco, & Cortez Castro, vs. Rey Mysterio, Prince Puma, & Dragon Azteca Jr. vs. Son of Havoc & Ivelisse (c) – Trios Championship (Elimination Match)
The current Trios Champions are going to have a very tough time defending their titles in this match. Normally, facing three other teams is already a disadvantage. It makes matters worse when the champions have to compete short-handed.

As soon as one member of a team takes a fall, their entire team is eliminated. One member from each team will be in the ring at the same time, and must tag in their own respective partners.

Cortez Castro and Joey Ryan argue over who should be the legal man, and Ivelisse takes advantage, rolling up Castro for the elimination. Eliminated: Joey Ryan, Cortez Castro, Mr. Cisco

PJ Black and Jack Evans work together to put Ivelisse away after reversing a sunset flip powerbomb. This confirms that there will be new Trios Champions. Eliminated: Son of Havoc & Ivelisse

Rey Mysterio takes advantage of great teamwork from his partners, finishing off Jack Evans with a split-legged moonsault to pick up the victory. Winners, and NEW Lucha Underground Trios Champions: Rey Mysterio, Prince Puma, & Dragon Azteca Jr.

Backstage Segment
Vampiro is with Pentagon Jr., who was injured with a broken back at the hands of Matanza Cueto several weeks ago. Pentagon Jr. cannot even stand up, resulting in Vampiro calling him “weak.”
