Lucha Underground S1E28 Recap: Defy the Odds (Again)

Photo from El Rey Network

On the previous episode of Lucha Underground, there was a debut of a luchador new to the Temple, a “unique opportunity,” and a #1 Contender’s match for the Lucha Underground Championship.

Jack Evans, former two-time AAA Tag Team Champion (once with fellow Lucha Underground star and Trios Champion Angélico), made his debut against Aerostar, and unfortunately lost his first match in the Temple. Fenix won a seven-man match to win the first of seven Aztec medallions, which Dario Cueto says will give him a chance at immortality. The main event for the show was Hernandez becoming the #1 Contender to the Lucha Underground Championship after some assistance from Johnny Mundo.

Tonight’s episode of Lucha Underground features the team of Angélico, Son of Havoc, and an injured Ivelisse defending their Trios Championship titles against The Crew in a ladder match.

This recap is part of a series that is recapping the entirety of Lucha Underground. If you would like to catch up on previous recaps, click here for the recap of the last episode. Currently, Lucha Underground airs Wednesdays on El Rey Network, and is now available on iTunes.

Marty “The Moth” Martinez vs. Prince Puma (w/Konnan)
Marty “The Moth” Martinez ran into Dario Cueto outside of the Temple a couple of weeks ago, asking Cueto for the opportunity to compete. Martinez claims that his heritage traces back to one of the original Aztec tribes, but Prince Puma’s heritage has proven to be related to the original Aztecs.

“The Moth” gets an impressive amount of offense in against the Lucha Underground Champion, but Prince Puma hits Trouble in Paradise, followed by the 630 Splash to put away the newcomer. Winner: Prince Puma

After the match, Hernandez is standing on the stairs, when Konnan issues an open challenge, giving Hernandez an opportunity to face Prince Puma for the Lucha Underground Championship. Hernandez starts going towards the ring, but decided not to compete, and assumedly wants to challenge Prince Puma on his own terms.

Backstage Segment
Vampiro is sitting backstage with Johnny Mundo, looking for some answers regarding Mundo’s actions last week. Last week, Mundo attacked Alberto El Patron during his match against Hernandez, sending him through the window of Dario Cueto’s office. Mundo doesn’t like that El Patron just walked into somewhere that Mundo has been working very hard in to climb the metaphorical ladder. Mundo attacked El Patron as a statement to Dario Cueto and the rest of the roster to let them know that this is Johnny Mundo’s world.

Delavar Daivari vs. Texano
Several weeks ago, Texano was competing in a match where he was thrown into Daivari. Daivari would attack Texano and throw him into rows of chairs. Two weeks ago, Daivari would have his Lucha Underground debut against Texano, but the match would end in less than thirty seconds after Texano was disqualified for pushing the referee. Tonight, this feud continues in a match, instead of a brawl.

During the match, Big Ryck comes down to the ring and attacks Texano, after allegedly being paid off by Daivari. Winner (via disqualification): Texano

After the match, Daivari arrogantly covers Texano, and forces the referee to count to three, even though he didn’t actually win the match.

Backstage Segment
Catrina appears out of nowhere in Dario Cueto’s office to let him know that Mil Muertes is coming back, more powerful than ever. Catrina suggests that Muertes puts away “The man who cannot die,” Fenix. Cueto likes the sound of that, and schedules a match for next week: Fenix vs. Mil Muertes in a Deathmatch.

Black Lotus, the mysterious woman who has been seen in training montages in the past few weeks, is set on a mission: to kill the brother of Dario Cueto. Her mentor is sitting by himself when he is confronted by a returning Chavo Guerrero, who offers is help, as long as Lotus’s mentor helps the Guerrero family in Mexico.

The Crew vs. Son of Havoc, Ivelisse, & Angélico (c) – Ladder Match (Trios Championship)
Before the match even starts, The Crew attacks the Trios Champions during their entrance. Between this attack and the fact that Ivelisse is injured, The Crew has this match in the bag.

After the men fight in a brutal match, Ivelisse drags herself to the top of a ladder to grab the Trios Championship titles, and overcome the odds yet again. Winners, and STILL Lucha Underground Trios Champions: Ivelisse, Son of Havoc, & Angélico
