Lucha Underground Recap: First-Time Champions

Photo from El Rey Network

Last week’s episode featured a fatal four-way match, a singles match, and a seven-way match for the Gift of the Gods Championship. To start the night, Daga won a fatal four-way match after Kobra Moon, one of his opponents, let him take the pinfall with some unknown intentions. After the match, Marty “The Moth” Martinez would defeat Killshot in singles action, and would steal Killshot’s dog tags in the process. To main event the night, Cage would interfere in the seven-way match to help Chavo Guerrero win the Gift of the Gods Championship.

Tonight, Cage’s plan comes into fruition when he gets the opportunity to win the Gift of the Gods Championship from Chavo Guerrero. Also, PJ Black, Jack Evans, and Fenix will have a Trios Championship match in the main event.

Opening Segment
Pentagon Jr. is with his mentor, and says that he is ready to return to action. Several weeks ago, Matanza Cueto broke Pentagon Jr.’s back by slamming him through the announcer’s table, and Pentagon Jr. has been out of action ever since. Vampiro says that Pentagon Jr. is ready, but not to take on Matanza just yet.

Joey Ryan vs. Mascarita Sagrada (w/Famous B)
Famous B has been managing Mascarita Sagrada for several weeks now with the intention to make Sagrada famous. Since signing with Famous B, however, Mascarita Sagrada has not won a single match.

Joey Ryan hits Sagrada with a Tornado DDT and picks up the victory, increasing the losing streak of Mascarita Sagrada. Winner: Joey Ryan

Backstage Segment
King Cuerno is in his trophy room, which contains tons of animal heads. More notably, however, is that it also contains Mil Muertes in the coffin he was put in by Matanza Cueto. Cuerno says that although Muertes might have been king of the jungle, it was Cuerno’s jungle that Muertes inhabited.

Chavo Guerrero (c) vs. Cage – Gift of the Gods Championship
A few weeks ago, Cage successfully defended his Aztec medallion against Mascarita Sagrada, but Chavo Guerrero would steal the medallion form Cage. This would allow Guerrero to compete in the Gift of the Gods Championship match last week, which he would win thanks to the help of Cage’s interference. Cage helped Guerrero win the belt because he knew that they would be squaring off tonight, and Cage is hell bent on destroying Guerrero.

Chavo Guerrero pulls out all of the stops, but Cage just overpowers the third generation luchador. After hitting the Lucha Destroyer (modified sit-out tombstone piledriver), Cage gets the pinfall to become the new Gift of the Gods Champion. Winner, and NEW Gift of the Gods Champion: Cage

After the match, Cage cashes in his title for a Lucha Underground Championship match against Matanza Cueto next week.

Backstage Segment
PJ Black and Jack Evans are getting ready for their Trios Championship match when they are approached by Taya, who has a surprise for them. The surprise is a knocked out Fenix in the locker room, which allows for Johnny Mundo to take  his place in the Trios Championship match tonight.

We switch gears to Cortez Castro and Joey Ryan looking through Dario Cueto’s office, when they are interrupted by Mr. Cisco. In the heat of the moment, Joey Ryan pulls a gun on Cisco, and Castro puts him under arrest.

PJ Black, Jack Evans, & Johnny Mundo (w/Taya) vs. Rey Mysterio, Prince Puma, & Dragon Azteca Jr. (c) – Trios Championship
Both of these teams were in the latest Trios Tournament finals, where the current champions scored the victory and took the titles from Angélico, Son of Havoc, and Ivelisse. Black, Evans, and Mundo have an uphill battle ahead against perhaps the most “fan favorite” team in the Temple.

While the referee is distracted by Taya on the ring apron, Jack Evans hits Dragon Azteca with a chair, giving Johnny Mundo the opportunity to get the pinfall and the victory. Winners, and NEW Trios Champions: PJ Black, Jack Evans, & Johnny Mundo
