Lucha Underground Recap: Who is Son of Madness?

Photo from El Rey Network

If you have been following Lucha Underground for the past few weeks, you already know that tonight is about one thing: The Cueto Cup. We’re coming towards the end of Round One, featuring the likes of Mil Muertes, Taya, Joey Ryan, and Paul London.

Opening Segment
The show starts with Catrina talking to Mil Muertes. While stroking her Aztec stone, she orders him to continue his quest to the Lucha Underground Championship by destroying the competition. Muertes obeys, calling Catrina “my love.” They kiss before Muertes turns his attention to the Cueto Cup.

Around the corner, we see Jeremiah Crane (also known as Solomon Crowe or Sami Callihan) seemingly frustrated. In the first half of the season, Crane professed his unusual love for Catrina.

Veneno vs. Mil Muertes – The Cueto Cup (Round One)
This is a very poor matchup for Veneno. This is only the second appearance in Lucha Underground for the spider-based luchador, but he is up against one of the most dominant competitors to ever step foot in the Temple. Mil Muertes was the first person to defeat Prince Puma, he’s defeated Pentagon Dark, and he has gone to war with Matanza Cueto.

After a 180-degree spinning chokeslam, Muertes finishes to dominant victory with the Flatliner. Of course, Catrina grabs Veneno to give him the Lick of Death. Muertes advances to the second round, where he will either face Vibora or Paul London. Winner: Mil Muertes | Eliminated: Veneno

Paul London vs. Vibora – The Cueto Cup (Round One)
This is the last chance for the Rabbit Tribe to get anywhere close to the Lucha Underground Championship. Over the past couple weeks, Mala Suerte and Saltador put on great performances but ended up losing their respective matches. Vibora, on the other hand, has been very dominant. Perhaps the tallest luchador on the roster, Vibora’s alliance with Kobra Moon and Pindar led to him becoming one-third of the current Lucha Underground Trios Champions.

Paul London manages to headscissors Vibora out of the ring, and while the “luchasaurus” heads back to the ring, the Rabbit Tribe appears out from under the ring to hold his legs down. The referee doesn’t see this and is forced to call for the count-out. London will face Mil Muertes in the second round of the Cueto Cup. Winner (via count-out): Paul London | Eliminated: Vibora

Taya vs. Joey Ryan – The Cueto Cup (Round One)
This match features one of the most impressive female wrestlers today against perhaps the sleaziest male wrestler ever. Joey Ryan first joined Lucha Underground as an undercover cop alongside Cortez Castro, but he sold out his partner to Dario Cueto in order to gain immunity for himself. Taya is aligned with Lucha Underground Champion Johnny Mundo as part of the Worldwide Underground (she is also engaged to Mundo).

Taya counters Ryan’s attempt at an electric chair and hits him with a beautiful Northern Lights suplex. She follows that up with a double stomp to make sure Ryan is down for the count, and the referee counts to three. Winner: Taya | Eliminated: Joey Ryan

Backstage Segment
Mil Muertes is seen coming out of the locker room in a suit when he is attacked by Jeremiah Crane. Crane assaults Muertes with a chair after telling him, “she’s mine,” meaning Catrina. It is unclear if Muertes can recover in time for his second round match against Paul London.

Promo Package
In the weeks approaching Johnny Mundo’s Lucha Underground Championship defense against Rey Mysterio, Lucha Underground is running hype videos to increase the anticipation for the historic match. The past two weeks highlighted how each competitor has prepared for facing the other, but this week, we hear the thoughts of Lucha Underground luchadores and staff.

Jeremiah Crane vs. Killshot – The Cueto Cup (Round One)
If Lucha Underground had a mid-card, Killshot and Jeremiah Crane would be the gatekeepers to the next level. Crane doesn’t have a ton of experience in the Temple, but he has already made himself at home with his ultraviolent style and lust for Catrina. Killshot has been steadily building his momentum since his debut. His incredible aerial ability has gotten the Believers behind him, and it led to him winning the only Weapons of Mass Destruction Match against Marty “The Moth” Martinez.

Killshot looks to put Crane away when Dante Fox appears in the rafters and distracts his former brother in arms. This slight distraction gave Crane the ability to put Killshot away with the double underhook piledriver for the win. Crane will head to the second round to face Taya. Winner: Jeremiah Crane | Eliminated: Killshot

Closing Segment
Dario Cueto is in his office talking about how great the Cueto Cup is going (he’s not wrong) when there is one match that still needs to be made. With Son of Havoc being the only member of the roster left, there is a new addition sitting with Cueto. He dons the same mask Son of Havoc wears, and he is also from the “open road.” His name? Son of Madness.
