Lucha Underground Recap: Several Surprise Victories

Photo from El Rey Network

Tonight, Lucha Underground looks to set the stage for Round Three of the Cueto Cup with three big matches. Pindar of the Reptile Tribe will take on Cage, Son of Havoc faces Dante Fox, and the main event features Prince Puma against The Worldwide Underground’s PJ Black.

Opening Segment
The show kicks off with Prince Puma on top of the Temple looking for some space to think. Puma has flashbacks of his battles with Mil Muertes and the destruction of his former mentor, Konnan. He is interrupted by Vampiro, who has been guiding Puma down a darker path throughout the entire season. Vampiro warns him that if does not win the championship, these “voices” he hears will consume him. He is determined to win the title and he calls Vampiro “master.”

Pindar (w/Kobra Moon) vs. Cage – The Cueto Cup (Round Two)
Without a doubt, Kobra Moon and her Reptile Tribe have been silently taking over Lucha Underground. By taking control of Drago, she dismantled the Trios Champions (Fenix and Aerostar at the time) before stealing the belt for her group. However, Cage is one of the most dominant luchadores in the Temple and now he holds a gauntlet that gives him supernatural power.

Before the match gets underway, the referee asks Cage to take off his gauntlet. Cage refuses and instead, he clotheslines the referee before starting to attack Pindar. The referee has enough consciousness to call for the disqualification before Cage lays him out with the Falcon Arrow. This gauntlet that Cage won after defeating Texano has been giving him more and more aggression, which could make The Machine unstoppable. Winner (via disqualification): Pindar | Eliminated: Cage

Dante Fox vs. Son of Havoc – The Cueto Cup (Round Two)
Both of these competitors had very interesting matches in the first round of the Cueto Cup. Son of Havoc faced Son of Madness, a newcomer to the Temple who seems to have a personal history with Havoc. Dante Fox faced a returning El Dragon Azteca Jr. and with the help of Johnny Mundo’s Worldwide Underground, Fox took out one of Lucha Underground’s brightest young stars.

Yet again, something happens before the match gets started. While Son of Havoc is coming down to the ring, Son of Madness attempts to choke him out from behind. They start brawling in the risers and Madness knocks him out with a steel chain. Dario Cueto leaves his office and says that the Cueto Cup must continue, giving Havoc two options: fight or forfeit. Of course, Havoc fights.

Son of Havoc fights as hard as he would any other day, but assumedly, Dante Fox’s advantage is what kept him one step ahead. After dodging a Shooting Star Press, he hits Havoc with the Fox Catcher to advance to Round 3. Winner: Dante Fox | Eliminated: Son of Havoc

PJ Black vs. Prince Puma – The Cueto Cup (Round Two)
In the first round of the Cueto Cup, PJ Black battled against former Lucha Underground Champion Sexy Star. Black would win the match by disqualification after Sexy Star punched him in the face with brass knuckles. Black is very talented, but he hasn’t had to show his skills thanks to the Worldwide Underground. He’ll have to step up his game against Prince Puma, however.

Puma is the first-ever Lucha Underground Champion who is essentially the Captain America of the Temple. Puma has always been on the side of good, battling monsters like Mil Muertes and Matanza Cueto while honing his skills under the tutelage of Konnan, Rey Mysterio, and now Vampiro.

After failing to put PJ Black away with a Super Hurricanrana, Puma dropkicks Black into position for the always beautiful 630 Splash. Puma advance to the third round where he will take on Dante Fox. This was a great match that showed the aerial abilities of both men, but it lost some impact by being sort of a spot fest. Winner: Prince Puma | Eliminated: PJ Black

Round Three of the Cueto Cup is almost set, so here are the matches we can look forward to:

  • Prince Puma vs. Dante Fox
  • Mil Muertes vs. Jeremiah Crane
  • Pindar vs. Fenix

Next week, the final match of the third round will be determined. Also, PJ Black will face Rey Mysterio to redeem himself for his tournament loss.
