Tonight starts the beginning of the end for the Cueto Cup. Two of the three matches tonight are part of the quarterfinals, with Pindar taking on Fenix and Dante Fox facing Prince Puma. In the main event, Lucha Underground Champion Johnny Mundo returns to action to face El Dragon Azteca Jr.
Opening Segment
The show kicks off with Dario Cueto approaching his brother, Matanza Cueto, in his cage. Dario says that Matanza has been overcome by hunger, which led to him getting pinned by Rey Mysterio in Aztec Warfare. He then warns that if Matanza does not control his hunger, it will destroy them both.
Pindar (w/Kobra Moon) vs. Fenix – The Cueto Cup (Round Three)
This battle surrounds the Trios Championships. Fenix held the title alongside Aerostar and Drago just before the Cueto Cup started until they were screwed out of the titles by Kobra Moon’s brainwashing of Drago. Out of the current Trios Champions, Pindar is the only one left in the Cueto Cup (both Vibora and Drago were eliminated in the first and second rounds, respectively).
It is pretty surprising how much Fenix has physically and emotionally recovered from what happened after he defeated Marty “The Moth” Martinez in the second round. Martinez and his sister, Mariposa, attacked him and left him defenseless. Martinez would then rip apart Fenix’s mask and brutally stab and scrape his forehead with a fork.
After hitting a Spanish Fly from the top rope, he climbs up one more time to hit Pindar in the stomach with double knees to advance to the semifinals. Winner: Fenix | Eliminated: Pindar
Backstage Segment
We switch gears to the Worldwide Underground in Dario Cueto’s office. Cueto says even though he has given them countless opportunities to use underhanded tactics, but they still come up short. In Johnny Mundo’s match later on tonight with El Dragon Azteca Jr., Cueto wants none of them to get involved.
El Jefe is getting ready to bring back the Gift of the Gods Championship, and with that, he is bringing back the seven Aztec Medallions. Taya, PJ Black, and Jack Evans are scheduled to compete for those Medallions but if they interfere at all in tonight’s main event, they will be banned from the Temple permanently and other luchadores will get their opportunities.
Dante Fox vs. Prince Puma
Well, this is going to be a hell of a match. Prince Puma is widely regarded as the most all-around talented luchador that Lucha Underground has to offer, with an insane amount of agility with unexpected strength. Dante Fox is a recent addition to the roster in the Temple and he has a lot of similar qualities to Puma, but he seems to put more of an emphasis on flashy moves.
“Dude, this kid is too much.” This is a quote from Vampiro during this match regarding Dante Fox and it rings true. There has been a trend in indie wrestling to hit every move possible before the match ends, and Fox embodies this match style. While this does a great job of showing Fox’s incredible athletic ability, it takes high impact moves and makes them meaningless. The match quickly goes from “I can’t believe he kicked out” to “Well, of course he kicked out.”
One move that doesn’t get kicked out of, however, is Prince Puma’s 630 Splash. After taking advantage of Fox’s mistakes, Puma hits the very impressive aerial move on Fox to advance to Round Four. Winner: Prince Puma | Eliminated: Dante Fox
After the match, Killshot immediately rushes the ring to attack Fox. Since both men left the military, they have had a heated personal rivalry that started with Fox attacking Killshot as his Temple debut. This time, Killshot returns the favor. He grabs a mic to tell Fox that this is not over between them.
Backstage Segment
Cortez Castro is in the detective’s office to talk about the supernatural gauntlet wielded by Cage. His boss wants the gauntlet, but Castro says that “no man alive” can take it away from The Machine.
Johnny Mundo vs. El Dragon Azteca Jr.
Last week, Rey Mysterio competed against PJ Black to warm up for his Lucha Underground Championship match in a few weeks against Johnny Mundo. Tonight, Mundo gets a warm-up of his own against El Dragon Azteca Jr., the man the Worldwide Underground screwed out of advancing in the Cueto Cup. This is the first time ever that these men are facing each other one-on-one.
El Dragon Azteca Jr. climbs the turnbuckles, but Mundo sweeps his legs from the top rope. Mundo then capitalizes to hit the End of the World, successfully picking up the win. After the match, Mundo grabs a steel chair and assaults Azteca by crushing his throat. Winner: Johnny Mundo
Before Mundo could assault Azteca any further, Rey Mysterio appears to save his friend and apprentice. Before Mundo completely leaves, he approached Dominic (Mysterio’s son), who is sitting at ringside. Mysterio looks to prevent anything from happening, but the Worldwide Underground surrounds him and forces him to watch the confrontation. Before Mundo leaves, he clocks Dominic with the Lucha Underground Championship.
