Luis Ortiz vs Malik Scott Odds – The boxing calendar sees Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing in Monte Carlo, Monaco for a big night of fights. The main events air on HBO in the United States and on SKY in the United Kingdom.
The main event sees Matchroom’s latest heavyweight signee Luis Ortiz (25-0) taking on veteran Malik Scott (38-2-1) in a match-up where Ortiz is actually one year older at 37. Ortiz is from Cuba and he has a long amateur background representing his island country. He turned professional in 2010 when already in his 30’s after he defected from Cuba, and he quickly became a heavyweight to watch. He captured an interim WBA world title but he was not content with the pace of his career being promoted by Oscar De la Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions. Earlier this year, he left GBP and recently signed with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom. And guess what? Boom, he had a match. Ortiz is going to be in the mix quickly now that he is on the European scene where most of the top heavyweights in the world reside. Hearn also represents IBF world champion Anthony Joshua, though no one expects Hearn to match Joshua with Ortiz any time soon.
Scott is a veteran with an elite record, but he comes with baggage. One of his losses comes at the hands of WBC world champion Deontay Wilder, who stopped him in round one. The problem for Scott is that the punch that landed did not seem to have landed flush and he made no attempt to get up. That loss came in March of 2014, and Scott has fought sporadically since, going 2-0 in the interim. He is currently on a layoff of over a year, last fighting in October of 2015 when he went the distance outpointing veteran Tony Thompson.
Popular Bitish fighter Martin Murray (33-4-1) was scheduled for a rematch against Arthur Abraham but Abraham pulled out with an injury. Instead, Murray will face 19-1-2 Dmitry Chudinov of Russia in one of the most competitive bouts at the books. Murray and Abraham first met back in November of 2015 and Murray lost a close split decision against the then WBO World champion. Chudinov steps in on short notice to log his third fight of 2016.
Two WBA world title fights are also on the card as super featherweight champion Jason Sosa (19-1-4) faces the challenge of Stephen Smith (24-2) and bantamweight titlist Jamie McDonnell (28-2-1) faces Venezuela’s Liborio Solis (25-4-1). Sosa defeated then unbeaten Javier Fortuna for the WBA belt this past June in China, while Smith will be making his second bid at a world title after losing to IBF champion Jose Pedraza this past April. McDonnell is making the fifth defense of the title he won back on May of 2014, and his record includes to stand out defenses as highly rated Tomoki Kamaeda of Japan.
