Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen Tosses a Chair; Bad Blood Between Todd Frazier and Jake Arrieta

Things aren’t great in the Big Apple right now if you’re a fan of New York’s second team. The Mets were seen as a potential playoff club at the start of 2019, but they are 40-49 going into today’s game just before the start of the All-Star Break. That frustration has been felt in the front office, as the relationship between GM Brodie Van Wagenen and manager Mickey Callaway has not been a great one. According to the New York Post, that frustration simmered over into a visible outburst on Saturday as Van Wagenen threw a chair before Callaway left for the post-game press conference.

Jake Arrieta had an awful outing against the Mets last night. He gave up 11 hits and five earned runs in 4 1/3 innings of work, and he picked up the loss in a 6-5 defeat. The Phillies pitcher appeared to be having control issues too, plunking Pete Alonso, Amed Rosario, and Todd Frazier. Frazier was none to happy about being hit and ended up getting tossed from the game after some pointed comments for both Arrieta and the umpire.

After the game, Arrieta made an unveiled threat toward Frazier, showing that he wasn’t ready to put the night’s earlier drama to bed.

Frazier seemed a little more diplomatic in regards to the situation this morning. He stated that he is just frustrated with the Phillies for continuing to plunk him. Frazier has been hit by a pitch seven times this season, and three of those have come in the Mets’ nine games with Philadelphia.

The MLB Futures Game is today. Diehard fans are familiar with some of the names in the lineup for both the American League and National League today, but this is when they will become more known to casual baseball followers. The vast majority of these players will be up in the big leagues in the next two seasons.
