The New York Mets take the field at 1:15 EST on a beautiful warm New York day today. They face the Cleveland Indians . Yesterday, the team made a valiant effort to come back from a 7-1 deficit in the top of the 8th inning against the Cleveland Indians, but fell short and lost 7-5.
Mets pitcher Matt Harvey retired the first 13 Indians he faced, but then Cleveland got their game going and scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, three more in the sixth and two in the seventh. Overall, they knocked Mets pitchers for 11 hits.
Harvey suffered his third straight loss to begin the season. He was quoted as saying, ““Nobody is more frustrated right now than I am,” Harvey said. “Not just today, but the last couple of starts, and there’s a lot of things that went wrong. There’s a lot more baseball to be played, which is good.”
True, but it didn’t help that he didn’t have any offense to back him up earlier in his start. Curtis Granderson started off the game with a solo shot over the outfield wall at the top of the 1st off of Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Josh Tomlin, who went on to earn his first notch in the win column this season. David Wright, Conforto, CespedesWalker, Cabrera and d’Arnaud also contributed hits in the loss that tied the series 1-1.
Yoenis Cespedes and Neil Walker both homered in the eighth. Cespedes hit a three-run blast for the Mets, while Walker enjoyed a solo homer.
The Mets come into today’s game with Stephen Matz on the mound. The Mets staff has a 3.58 ERA, which is the ninth lowest in the majors this season. Matz allowed a career-high seven runs in his last start on April 11 vs. Philadelphia. He was 4-0 with a 2.27 ERA (nine earned runs/35.2 innings) in six regular season starts in 2015. New York is 5-2 when he starts.
Mets fans are obviously a little frustrated and anxious, hoping that the National League Champions start to turn it around and look a little like the champs they are. Right now, they Mets are hitting .218 after 10 games, ranking 24th in the majors. They have scored 31 runs, tied for 27th in the majors and last year, the Mets hit .244, ranking 28th and scored 683 runs, ranking 17th. Matz will just have five days of rest (compared to 9 in his last start) when he takes the mound.
The Mets who face former AL Cy Young Award winner Cory Kluber today, faced him once before. On September 7, 2013, the Mets scored two runs over 5.0 innings in a 9-4 win at Progressive Field. He had a strong start against the Rays on April 12.
Mets fans are keeping pitcher Jacob deGrom in their thoughts. After an anxious-filled week of waiting for his son to be born, the baby was suffering from complications as of this write-up. Because of that, deGrom has been placed on the MLB’s Bereavement/Family Medical Emergency List. The Mets recalled infielder Eric Campbell from Las Vegas (AAA).
After this series, the Mets head down to Philly, where they will face their rivals for the last time this season in a three-game series before their next break on Thursday. Hopefully they can start to pull it together.
