Milwaukee Brewers vs. Cincinnati Reds Betting Preview 04/30/18

The Milwaukee Brewers will head east to face their division rival Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park. Fox Sports Net Wisconsin is in line to broadcast the action. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET.

Cincinnati (+110) is coming into this one as the underdog against Milwaukee (-120) and oddsmakers have put the Over/Under for this night game at 9.5 runs (-105 for the over and -115 for the under). Bettors can also wager on the game’s spread with the most recent runline odds sitting at Brewers -1.5 runs (+125) and Reds 1.5 runs (-145).

The Reds are only 7-21 SU and 12-15 ATS. They’ve lost 14.3 units for moneyline bettors and 8.3 units against the spread (ATS). The Reds will put the ball in the left hand of Brandon Finnegan (0-2, 8.03 ERA, 2.19 WHIP), who has 10 punchouts and nine walks this season. Finnegan only made one start against the Brewers in 2017 (0-0, 18.00 ERA across one inning).

Milwaukee’s pitchers have allowed 3.5 runs per game and its starting pitchers own a 3.62 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 6.60 K/9. The bullpen has managed an outstanding ERA of just 2.45, along with a WHIP of 1.26.

Brewers hitters have slashed .232/.304/.371 on their way to 3.7 runs scored per game this year, including 2.2 runs per game against divisional foes and 1.6 per game over the team’s last five outings (1-4 SU).

Lorenzo Cain and Eric Thames have led Milwaukee’s hitters. Cain is slashing .292/.405/.458 with 28 hits, eight RBIs, 17 runs and seven stolen bases, while Thames (.250/.351/.625) has produced 16 hits, seven homers, 13 RBIs and 11 runs scored.

Maintaining a slash line of .318/.400/.621 across 75 plate appearances, Cain enjoyed hitting against lefty pitching on the road last year (his total season line was .300/.363/.440).

In the other dugout, Cincinnati’s pitching staff has given up 5.5 runs per game overall in 2018. Its starters have an ERA of 5.49, a WHIP of 1.48 and a strikeouts-per-nine of 7.2. The bullpen has a 5.02 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 8.4 K/9. In 15 games against NL Central foes, Reds starters have an ERA of 6.10 and the bullpen’s ERA is 4.65.

The Cincinnati offense has put up 4.0 runs per outing, including 2.7 per game against divisional foes and 6.4 per game over its last five. The team has hit .309/.387/.505 over its last five matchups and is 2-3 SU during that stretch.

First baseman Joey Votto and left fielder Jesse Winker have led the Reds’ hitters this year. Votto is hitting .273/.397/.414 with four home runs, 14 RBIs and nine runs scored, and Winker’s line is .299/.415/.377 with 23 hits, nine RBIs and eight runs scored.

Compared to his overall season slash line of .320/.453/.577, Votto performed well against righty pitching at home last year, slashing .347/.490/.648 over 253 such plate appearances.

The Brewers have gained 0.0 units and are 4-4 ATS when facing a left-handed starting pitcher this season. The over has hit in three of those games, as opposed to five that’ve hit the under against lefty starters. On the other hand, the Reds have lost 12.5 units and are 10-13 ATS when facing a right-handed starting pitcher. The over’s hit in nine of those games, compared to 14 which went under the total.
