The 2017 MLB regular season is wrapping up in less than a week. In this article, we’ll take a look at the four most disappointing MLB teams this season in terms of underperforming based on the over/under win totals set up oddsmakers. Some teams headed into the 2017 regular season with extremely high hopes, both from the teams’ and oddsmakers’ perspectives. However, if you had taken the under for the win totals of these teams, you would have easily won your futures bet. Let’s take a look at the four most disappointing teams this season.
San Francisco Giants
We know that the San Francisco Giants’ year is even-numbered years but no one could have predicted their abysmal season this year. Currently, the Giants are sitting at 61 wins. Compare this number to their over/under win total of 88.5 wins set by oddsmakers – the Giants aren’t even close. In the stacked National League West, you’d expect the Giants to be at least one of the top three teams. Instead, they’re in last place, trailing the fourth-place San Diego Padres by 9.0 games and the Los Angeles Dodgers by 38.0 games! The Giants have ranked near the bottom of the NL in batting but have been average in pitching and fielding. The 2017 regular season is clearly forgettable on the part of the Giants. Let’s hope they can bounce back next year.
New York Mets
The New York Mets’ formidable starting rotation has been decimated by injuries all season long. Noah Syndergaard has only pitched 28.1 innings; Matt Harvey 88.2 innings; and Steven Matz 66.2 innings. The Mets currently rank near the bottom of the NL in terms of pitching and below-average batting and fielding. With 66 wins to-date, they’re a far cry from their over/under win total set before the start of the regular season of 87.5 wins. To put things in perspective, the Mets have a worse record than the Atlanta Braves this season and are currently in fourth-place in the NL East, trailing the first-place Washington Nationals by 28.0 games.
Toronto Blue Jays
After appearing in back-to-back American League Championship Series, the Toronto Blue Jays find themselves in last-place in the American League East, trailing the first-place Boston Red Sox by 18.5 games. While the Blue Jays were expected to take a slight hit this season with the departure of Edwin Encarnacion, their entire team has been somewhat out-of-sorts, with key injuries to players such as Josh Donaldson and Aaron Sanchez. The Blue Jays have only won 73 games so far, trailing their over/under win total of 85.5 wins. Surprisingly, the category that has let the Blue Jays down the most this season is the team’s offense, as the team’s pitching and fielding have been somewhat respectable. For the past two seasons, it’s the Blue Jays’ offense that’s carried the team but this season has been a completely different story. With Jose Bautista likely playing his final season in the MLB, the Blue Jays will look to find a new leader during the offseason, with plenty of questions looming for the start of next season.
Detroit Tigers
The Detroit Tigers, currently sitting at 62 wins and last-place in the AL Central, have under performed all year, with their win/loss total set at 82.5 wins. The Tigers have obviously conceded to this being a lost season, with major trades and shakeups that have placed the team in the conversation of rebuilding. It started with guys like J.D. Martinez before the trade deadline and continued after it as they managed to move Justin Verlander and his big contract to the Houston Astros.
The Tigers are bottom feeders in the league in terms of pitching and average in terms of batting and fielding. They own the worst run differential in the AL and second-worst in the MLB. It’s hard to believe that a team with this much talent proved to be the worse in the division and one of the worst in baseball, but that’s the way it played out. That’s one of the main reasons why they fired manager Brad Ausmus and will be looking for a new bench boss of the coming months.
