Let’s take a look at our top five for the second base position.
Ian Kinsler – Detroit Tigers
Although he’s 33, Kinsler is perhaps the most proven commodity at the second base position for a Detroit team that is again expected to contend for the American League pennant. It was another productive season for Kinsler last year as he had 100 runs, 40 doubles, 17 home runs, 92 runs batted in, with a .420 slugging percentage. Kinsler is at an age where regression will soon arrive but that may also serve to protect his draft value against more trendy names.
Anthony Rendon – Washington Nationals
The 24 year old Rendon is one of the key components to a Washington Nationals team that is a top pick to win the National League pennant. Rendon had an impressive .824 OPS and .473 slugging percentage last year with 111 runs scored, 39 doubles, 21 home runs, 83 runs batted in, and 17 stolen bases. Of concern is that Rendon was something of a sleeper pick last year and now the secret is out. He will serve as the Nats number two hitter and will also see a lot of action at third base.
Jose Altuve – Houston Astros
Our number three pick for second base is only 24 years of age and looks to have plenty of upside. Altuve is coming off a .830 OPS and .453 slugging percentage last year with 85 runs, 56 stolen bases, and 47 doubles. Altuve adds an element of speed which can help prevent prolonged slumps at the plate. Still lesser known that Robinson Cano and facing skepticism that he came too far too fast last year, Altuve makes for an attractive choice.
Robinson Cano – Seattle Mariners
Cano will of course come at a premium price as the consensus choice as the best second baseman on the board but there is a compelling case that he is worth it. At the age of 32, there are some concerns about the eventual and inevitable decline but Cano brings too much skill to the table which will likely avert a major drop in the next couple of seasons. The new look Mariners are vastly improved and a trendy pick to contend for a playoff spot and have a lineup that will protect Cano. Cano is coming off a .454 slugging percentage last year with 77 runs scored, 37 doubles, and an OPS of .836.
Dee Gordon – Miami Marlins
Our sleeper pick epitomizes the old saying about how speed kills. It is Gordon’s speed that helps produce infield hits that prevent prolonged slumps and turn into doubles thanks to Gordon’s 64 stolen bases last year. Gordon had 92 runs, 12 triples, and a .704 OPS. Gordon must improve his ability to draw walks to become a complete player but still is an intriguing bargain.
