MLB in London, McKay Making Debut and More

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

As baseball readies for its Saturday debut in London, the sights and sounds are spectacular. Back stateside, the Astros broke out of a funk with a walk-off — and what better way is there to do it? The Rays are calling up Brendan McKay, who could end up being the next two-way sensation, though for now he’ll just be a pitcher. There’s a polar bear headed for the Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game in a couple of weeks, and another beautiful sunset for the Rockies. Lots to take in on a Major League Baseball weekend.

There’s a sense of been there, done that when it comes to the Red Sox and Yankees playing every week on TV, but this one is gonna feel different.

The Astros had been scuffling and seen their division lead drop to below five games. Then they were down 1-0 in the eighth inning to the lowly Mariners. Then magic happened a couple of times.

Is Brendan McKay the next Ohtani? Maybe, maybe not, but he does have some really good minor-league pitching stats, and that’s a good place to start.

Pete Alonso, the polar bear, just keeps raking and raking and piling up records and honors. And, oh by the way, he’ll also hit in the Home Run Derby, which just got a little more interesting.

The Rockies won a game on Friday night against the powerful Dodgers, but let’s be honest: With sunsets like these, they never really lose.
