It’s not every day that Reds rookie Aristides Aquino hits a home run. OK, so, it’s almost every day. Aquino was at it again Thursday, mashing his 14th home run in his first month in the big leagues, this one against the Miami Marlins. Elsewhere, the Athletics won a big game in the AL wild-card race in part because of a rare rule. The Astros GM is confident that Houston will have home-field advantage if it reaches the World Series. That’s in part because Hyun-Jin Ryu has suddenly looked vulnerable for the Los Angeles Dodgers. And it’s another milestone for the Mariners’ Felix Hernandez.
Aquino has tied a record for home runs in a month in team history, and he’s climbing the all-time leader board for rookies in a single month.
Aristides Aquino has 14 HR this month.
Only 3 rookies have hit more in a single month.
Most HR in calendar month, rookies:
1937 Rudy York: 18 in Aug
2017 Aaron Judge: 15 in Sept
1987 Mark McGwire: 15 in May
2019 Aristides Aquino: 14 in Aug— Sarah Langs (@SlangsOnSports) August 29, 2019
The A’s got a key insurance run when umpires allowed Seth Brown to score from third because Royals third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert fell into the dugout after catching a foul pop.
Seth Brown has just scored on a popup that Cuthbert caught in foul territory – and fell into the A’s dugout, taking the ball out of play. I’ve never seen that before.

The Astros somewhat quietly snuck up on the Yankees and Dodgers in the race for baseball’s best record and are just a game behind. Their GM says they’re not done, either.

The Yankees and Diamondbacks have pummeled the Dodgers’ Hyun-Jin Ryu in back-to-back starts, and his dream season is starting to go awry.
A couple off games by Ryu and the NL Cy Young race is now wide open. Also in star-studded derby: deGrom, Scherzer, Kershaw, Soroka, Corbin, Strasburg, Greinke, Castillo, S. Gray.

Felix Hernandez isn’t having a great twilight to his career, but early success is still allowing him to be compared with Hall of Famers. On Thursday, he passed Christy Mathewson on the all-time strikeout list.
With his punchout of Danny Santana, Félix Hernández recorded his 2️⃣5️⃣0️⃣8️⃣th strikeout and moves ahead of Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson for 37th-most in MLB history. 👑 #TrueToTheBlue pic.twitter.com/qqRTY8YqQq
