The Chicago Cubs are without a key player for at least a little while longer, as Javier Baez’s thumb continues to bother him. Off the field, Major League Baseball is considering testing for opioid use in the wake of Tyler Skaggs’ death. On the field, the Dodgers are going to give Hyun-Jin Ryu, their best pitcher for the first half of the season, a break as he continues to struggle. The Yankees will honor longtime rival David Ortiz and the Cubs are calling up a former No. 2 pick who has had a long road to the majors.

Baez was scratched from the lineup Thursday and also missed Friday’s game. He’ll undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the damage.

Major League Baseball is determining how it can prevent another tragedy like the one that befell the Angels and Tyler Skaggs.

The Dodgers are hoping a longer rest will give Hyun-Jin Ryu a chance to return to his sterling first-half form.

Good to see former opponents putting aside a rivalry to be with David Ortiz as he recovers from his shooting in June.

Danny Hultzen was the No. 2 pick in the 2011 draft and has finally made the majors after some serious battles with injuries.
