It’s been a harrowing month for David Ortiz. The former Boston Red Sox slugger was shot on June 9 while at a bar in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. He was severely wounded as a result of the shooting and rushed into emergency surgery. Ortiz was reportedly in stable condition after coming out of surgery, but there have been complications since that night.

Ortiz’s wife, Tiffany, revealed on Thursday that the slugger underwent a third surgery earlier in the week at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The statement was short, but she indicated that there had been continued complications as a result of the shooting:
“Earlier this week, David underwent a third surgery for complications resulting from his gunshot wound. The operation was performed by Dr. David King at Massachusetts General Hospital. David is recovering well and is in good spirits. “We continue to be incredibly appreciative of the kindness and compassion shown to David and to our entire family during this difficult time.”

Since the shooting, it’s been hard to sort out what exactly happened that night. Originally, Ortiz was seen as the intended target and that a gunman was promised $7,800 to shoot him. However, new details continue to emerge in this case.
Now, it appears that the target was Sixto David Fernandez, who was seated across from Ortiz in the bar that evening. Reportedly, Fernandez was targeted by his cousin, and the two are suspected to be involved in drug trafficking. That seems strange though as, according to a Boston Globe report, Fernandez and Ortiz have very distinct physical characteristics.
Additionally, the reported amount of money involved in the shooting has changed too. Now, prosecutors are claiming that the alleged gunman was offered $30,000 for the shooting, nearly quadrupling the original amount.
Ortiz has not commented with regards to the shooting, but it seems like we’re still a ways away from figuring out what happened that night.
