The Atlanta Braves’ newest addition, veteran catcher Francisco Cervelli, seems a savvy one, after Cervelli made his Braves debut with three hits, including two doubles, in a win against the Mets. In another big series, the Dodgers evened things up against the Yankees after a controversial finish. Elsewhere, the Brewers have given up on their opening-day starter and Pete Alonso keeps hitting dingers for the Mets.
Cervelli asked the Pirates for his release so he could play for a contender down the stretch. Looks like he’s enjoying it thus far.
“I don’t have anything. They helped me out and I helped them.”

The Dodgers led the Yankees 2-1 in the ninth inning when Brett Gardner broke up a double play chance at second base. Gleyber Torres tried to race home from third, but the umpires granted Kenley Jansen timeout before Torres could get home. Gardner was called safe, but Jansen struck out the next two batters with the bases loaded to escape with a controversial win.
Gleyber Torres: “For sure, I saw an opportunity to get a (run). I think (it was) a great decision, but I don’t know what is wrong with umpires today. We can’t control that.”

Fearing Hyun-Jin Ryu is getting fatigued during a Cy Young-level season, the Dodgers have plans to cut back his starts for the rest of the regular season.
ICYMI: Barnes is back, Hill is closer to his return, Ryu is getting some time off.

Jhoulys Chacin was the Brewers’ opening-day starter, but he’s struggled so badly that fading Milwaukee felt forced to give up on him before rosters expand.
The #Brewers Opening Day SP curse:

The Mets have cooled off some, but Pete Alonso hasn’t. The rookie hit his 41st home run, tying the Mets’ franchise record and putting him one off the Major League lead.
