With the MLS regular season winding down, there was certainly plenty of scoring around the league this past week with only one team managing to record a clean sheet win. It’s no surprise that their goalkeeper registered the best fantasy stat line for his position this past weekend, but there were certainly plenty of surprises at other positions where the top fantasy performers certainly aren’t among the biggest names in the league.
Here is a look at the best individual fantasy performances by position from this past week in the MLS.
G: Tim Melia, Sporting Kansas City
There really wasn’t any question about who the best MLS goalkeeper was in terms of fantasy production this past weekend as Melia stopped all six shots he made for the clean sheet victory. A yellow card did hurt his overall mark for the week but he stood on his head to help Sporting Kansas City earn its first win in three games. He certainly did enough to edge out the competition as the top fantasy goalkeeper from this past weekend. Honourable Mention: Jon Busch, Chicago; Chris Konopka, Toronto FC; Jesse Gonzalez, FC Dallas
D: Zach Loyd, FC Dallas
While Sporting KC was the best defensive team this past weekend, it was FC Dallas that put on the best offensive display with a 4-1 win over the Houston Dynamo. That snapped a two-game mini slide. Loyd made an impact at both ends of the park including an assist to separate his self from the competition as a surprise pick as one the top fantasy defenders from this past week.
D: Lovel Palmer, Chicago
Palmer is another surprise defender on this list after he registered his first point in 21 games this season with an assist in a 3-1 win over the New England Revolution. Palmer had been held pointless with just six shots in his previous 20 games for the Union but he had an impact at both ends of the pitch this past weekend. His first point of the year was enough to give him the edge over the rest of the MLS defenders – including the most expensive option for Daily Fantasy Leagues in New England’s Chris Tierney. Honourable Mention: Chris Tierney, New England; Steven Vitoria, Philadelphia; Sean St Ledger, Colorado

M: Luke Mulholland, Real Salt Lake
Mulholland’s goal against the Colorado Rapids was his first point since mid-July but it was a big one as it stood as the difference in Real Salt Lake’s 2-1 win. A yellow card hurt his final fantasy point total but he was excellent for RSL. In the end, the fact that he was credited with a game-winning goal helped make the difference in him registering one of the best stat lines among MLS midfielders this past weekend.
M: Mauro Diaz, FC Dallas
Diaz got the party started for FC Dallas with a penalty kick goal in the 25th minute and their offense never slowed down after that with four goals in the win. Diaz now has a point in back-to-back games and is up to six goals and six assists on the season. Honourable Mention: Frank Lampard, New York City FC; Christian Techera, Vancouver
F: David Teixeira, FC Dallas
FC Dallas scored more goals than any other team this past weekend and it was Teixeira leading the charge up front with a pair of tallies – including the game-winning marker. Teixeira is up to five goals and three assists in 18 games this season and FC Dallas will need him to stay hot as they head towards the postseason looking to do some serious damage as a top contender in the Western Conference.
F: Harrison Shipp, Chicago
Shipp led the way for the Fire in their surprising 3-1 win over New England with a goal and an assist including the winner. The fact that a Chicago team that sits in last place in the Eastern Conference was able to steal three points from a playoff team in the Revolution at this point in the season is impressive. Their offense is a big reason they were able to get the job done led by Shipp up front. Honourable Mention: Sebastian Giovinco, Toronto FC; Bradley Wright-Phillips, New York Red Bulls; Cyle Larin, Orlando City SC
