We start off our MLS fantasy recap with the five clean sheets in that happened this past weekend. That meant five teams that failed to register a single goal with David Villa, Didier Drogba and Dom Dwyer among the notable forwards that were blanked. It also means a number of solid performances from MLS goalkeepers and you were lucky in Daily Fantasy Leagues if you had one of them in your lineup. Here is a look at the top individual fantasy performers by position from the MLS this past weekend.
GK: David Bingham, San Jose
Vancouver, DC United, Toronto FC, Columbus and Philadelphia all recorded clean sheet victories over the weekend but in terms of goalkeeper performances nobody was better than Bingham in a clean sheet victory for San Jose. Bingham made five saves to help the Earthquakes to secure their fourth victory of the season and his outstanding performance was more than enough to edge out Whitecaps’ goalkeeper David Ousted for the best fantasy performance at his position.
Honorable Mention: David Ousted, Vancouver; Travis Worra, DC United; Clint Irwin, Toronto FC
D: Jordan Harvey, Vancouver
The Whitecaps were outshot 18-12 but Ousted stood tall in goal and Harvey delivered an excellent performance in front of him both defensively and pushing forward with the second goal in a 3-0 win. It was Harvey’s second goal in eight games on the year and there is no doubt about the crucial role he played helping Vancouver bounce back coming off of consecutive losses.
Honorable Mention: Rafael Ramos, Orlando City SC; Ashley Cole, LA Galaxy
M: Emmanuel Boateng, LA Galaxy
Boateng was the biggest star of many in the LA Galaxy’s 5-2 win over Real Salt Lake. The 22-year-old had a goal and two assists for his first three points of the season for the best MLS fantasy score on the board regardless of position over the weekend. It will be interesting to see if Boateng can build on the performance after recording his first three points of the season.
M: Mike Magee, LA Galaxy
It should be no surprise that Boateng isn’t the only Galaxy midfielder that delivered from an MLS fantasy perspective in a 5-2 victory with Magee scoring a goal on one of the four shots he fired in the win. Magee was instrumental in setting up a number of opportunities for LA along with Steven Gerrard, who also registered a goal versus Real Salt Lake.
Honorable Mention: Steven Gerrard, LA Galaxy; Lamar Neagle, DC United; Will Johnson, Toronto FC
F: Sebastian Giovinco, Toronto FC
Giovinco was the difference maker in Toronto’s victory over the rival Montreal Impact over the weekend as he scored both of their goals in a 2-0 win. Giovinco extended his scoring streak to three games and now has six goals in seven contests so far this season. He has been one of the most lethal strikers in MLS fantasy since he arrived here last season and there is no reason to expect him to slow down as TFC aims to contend for top spot in the Eastern Conference this season. Toronto FC still has just eight goals in seven games this season.
F: Bradley Wright-Phillips, New York Red Bulls
Wright-Phillips delivered in a major way up front in MLS fantasy for the Red Bulls as they snapped a four-game slide against Orlando City SC over the weekend. Wright-Phillips scored two goals including the game-winning marker in the 75th minute of a 3-2 victory with four shots on target for the second-best fantasy score among MLS forwards. Wright-Phillips has already fired 31 shots through just eight games and if he continues to shoot like that he should continue to find the back of the net for the Red Bulls. The challenge is the Red bulls can’t seem to stop anyone at the other end. They’ve allowed a whopping 17 goals in just eight games this season, which is the most in the Eastern Conference by a mile. New England has allowed the second-most at just 13.
Honorable Mention: Gyasi Zardes, LA Galaxy; Mike Grella, New York Red Bulls; Alvaro Saboro, DC United
