There was certainly plenty of scoring in the MLS this past weekend with 11 teams scoring two goals or more in their respective games. Surprisingly, it was a pair of teammates for the New England Revolution and Columbus Crew that stole the spotlight from an MLS fantasy perspective, with New England in particular picking up an important three points in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Here is a look at the top individual MLS fantasy performances by position from this past weekend.
GK: Tim Howard, Colorado
The Rapids earned at least a point for the second game in a row thanks to the play of Howard in goal, as he stopped all three shots he faced to preserve the clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with San Jose. Colorado is right in the thick of the battle for position in the Western Conference playoff picture and will need Howard to step up big time down the final stretch if they are going to have any shot of challenging for one of the top two seeds.
Honorable Mention: David Bingham, San Jose; Stefan Frei, Seattle; Joe Willis, Houston
D: Bobby Boswell, DC United
Boswell was certainly busy in DC United’s 2-2 draw with the Chicago Fire, scoring a goal of his own and then doing his best at the other end of the pitch to help clinch an important point. DC fell to two points back of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but Boswell still produced the best fantasy score out of any MLS defender for this past weekend.
Honorable Mention: Khiry Shelton, New York City FC; Justin Morrow, Toronto FC
M: Kelyn Rowe, New England
The first of two sets of teammates to double down at their respective positions belongs to New England, who featured Rowe and Kei Kamara as the top performers in their 3-1 win over Montreal. Rowe set up Kamara’s opening goal and then added two markers of his own to finish with three points and a total of five shots while clinching top fantasy honors at his position over the weekend.
M: Kei Kamara, New England
Kamara did an excellent job in a best supporting midfield role behind Rowe over the weekend, registering a goal and an assist with three shots. The performance of the New England midfielders allowed the Revolution to jump in to sole possession of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with just four games left on their regular season schedule. New England has rarely been serviceable this season in terms of offense for MLS fantasy. However, this is one time when one of their stars came through. New England has tallied just 37 goals so far this season. Only one other team in the Eastern Conference has scored fewer goals.
Honorable Mention: Dom Dwyer, Sporting Kansas City; Razvan Cocis, Chicago; Alex, Houston
F: Ola Kamara, Columbus
Kamara was an absolute monster in the Crew’s 4-1 win over Orlando City SC, assisting on an early goal before adding two of his own to complete the blowout win. Kamara’s three points up front were matched only by his teammate Ethan Finlay, who finished with one fewer shot in the lopsided victory.
F: Ethan Finlay, Columbus
Finlay opened the scoring for Columbus in just the sixth minute versus Orlando City SC, then added two assist to join Kamara as the only two MLS forwards with three points in a game over the weekend. Anybody who had both of the Crew’s top two forwards in their fantasy lineup over the weekend was very lucky. Columbus seems to have found another gear with three wins in its last six games and it should be no surprise that they have scored two goals or more in each of those wins. Columbus hasn’t really been much of a juggernaut in terms of offense as they’ve scored just 40 goals in 28 games this season. Only three teams have scored less in the Eastern Conference, so that gives you an idea of just how rarely they’ve been reliable in terms of offense for MLS fantasy.
Honorable Mention: Bradley Wright-Phillips, New York Red Bulls; Jozy Altidore, Toronto FC; Didier Drogba, Montreal
