MLS Fantasy: Week 6 Recap

It was offense that shined across the MLS fantasy this past weekend with three goals or more scored in all but two of the 10 games. That created some obvious picks for the best fantasy goalkeeper performances of the week but who separated themselves from the rest up front? Here is a look at the top individual fantasy performances by position from MLS fantasy this past weekend.

GK: Nick Rimando, Real Salt Lake

Rimando’s four saves were enough to help Real Salt Lake hold on for the 1-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps. It was RSL’s third straight win and second in a row in which they completely shut down their opponent. Rimando has been excellent early on and he finished with one more save than Toronto FC’s Clint Irwin to secure the best fantasy score among MLS goalkeepers this past weekend.

Honorable Mention: Clint Irwin, Toronto FC

D: Chad Marshall, Seattle

The Sounders were in big trouble when they opened the season with three straight losses but they have turned things around somewhat with two wins and a draw over their last three. Marshall helped make the difference with a goal in a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Union in order to edge out Ronald Zubar and Mekell Williams for the top MLS fantasy score among defenders. Seattle is now in eighth place in the Western Conference with seven points. They are a long way from the top where FC Dallas has already collected 17 points.

Honorable Mention: Ronald Zubar, New York Red Bulls; Mekell Williams, Colorado; David Horst, Houston

M: Justin Meram, Columbus

It took some time but Columbus finally clinched its first win of the season with a 3-2 victory over New York City FC thanks to an outstanding performance from Meram in their midfield. Meram assisted on goals from Ethan Finlay Kei Kamar, then scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 80th minute to make the difference in the game and earn top MLS fantasy honors at his position.  Columbus’ win was their first in six games this season and they now have just five points on the season. That puts them in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, which is only two points better than last place New York Red Bull.

M: Giovani Dos Santos, LA Galaxy

Dos Santos helped LA extend its undefeated run to four games in a row with a pair of goals in a 4-1 win over Houston. Baggio Husidic was created with the game-winning goal but it was Dos Santos that was the biggest star for the Galaxy as he scored twice on as many shots to slightly edge out Colorado’s jermain Jones for the second-best fantasy score among MLS midfielders. The Galaxy have now scored 12 goals in six games, which is the third-most goals of any team in the Western Conference.

Honorable Mention: Jermain Jones, Colorado; Ethan Finlay, Columbus; Kaka, Orlando City SC

F: David Villa, New York City FC

The most ridiculous aspect of Villa’s performance on Saturday was the fact that NYCFC ended up losing to Columbus despite the fact that he scored twice and fired off seven shots in the game. Villa was an absolute beast in the loss and while there is no doubt he deserved top fantasy honors at his position it had to be a disappointment for him and the fans that New York City FC couldn’t pull out the win. NYCFC is now in sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings with just six points.

F: Fanendo Adi, Portland

The second-best fantasy score among MLS forwards this week was posted by a player that wasn’t even in the starting lineup for his team over the weekend as Adi came off the bench to score two goals for the Timbers in their 3-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes. Adi is up to six goals in seven games for Portland this season and his ability to strike in such a short period of time off the bench has been extremely impressive.

Honorable Mention: Dominic Oduro, Montreal; Alexander Ivanschitz, Seattle; Sebastian Giovinco, Toronto FC
