After two weeks of Golf Cup action, the MLS Top Five Power Rankings get a major shakeup this week including a new No. 1. There were 14 teams that played twice in Week 20, including an Atlanta United side that pushed its way on to this list by extending its win streak to four in a row with back-to-back wins over San Jose and Orlando. Here is a look at the MLS top five power rankings for this week.
1. FC Dallas
Last Week: 3
MLS Championship Betting Odds: +700
FC Dallas moved from No. 3 on this list to No. 1 following a 2-1 win over Montreal that extended the club’s win streak to three in a row. FC Dallas has just one loss since May 25th, posting a 4-3-1 mark over that span. It took more than half of the season but Cristian Coleman is finally finding his form after scoring twice against the Impact. FC Dallas is now all alone atop the Western Conference standings and all alone atop our power rankings for this week.
2. Toronto FC
Last Week: 1
MLS Championship Betting Odds: +800
Toronto FC moved one point up on the Chicago Fire for the best record in the Eastern Conference with a draw against Colorado. TFC is 3-2-1 over its last six games and leads the MLS with 40 points on the season. The fact that Toronto managed to stay undefeated during the Gold Cup action despite missing regulars Jozy Altidore and Michael Bradley is impressive. The fact that Sebastian Giovinco was also banged up is testament to how TFC has persevered thanks to its depth. Toronto is the frontrunner in the Eastern Conference but Chicago is right behind them.
3. Chicago Fire
Last Week: 2
MLS Championship Betting Odds: +900
Chicago slips from No. 1 to No. 3 in our power rankings after suffering their first loss since April 29th. The Fire didn’t have Dax McCarty for their 2-1 loss to New York City FC, but they aren’t the only team that was shorthanded this week thanks to the Gold Cup. Now Chicago will need to bounce back on the road with a tough matchup against Sporting KC this week.
4. New York City FC
Last Week: 4
MLS Championship Betting Odds: +900
New York City FC continued to close in on Toronto and Chicago atop the Eastern Conference by securing four of a possible six points this past week. NYCFC followed up a 2-2 draw with TFC by handing the Fire their first loss since the end of April. After proving themselves against the top two teams in the Eastern Conference, New York now gets a rematch against Toronto FC on the road this week before taking on the rival New York Red Bulls.
New York City FC is currently in third place in the Eastern Conference with 37 points. They have been one of the best teams in terms of offense this season as they have tallied 40 goals already in 21 games. No team in the MLS has scored more goals than them.
5. Atlanta United
Last Week: –
MLS Championship Betting Odds: +1200
Atlanta United’s march towards securing a playoff spot continued with a 1-0 win over Orlando City SC that pushed their win streak to four in a row. Atlanta United earned a spot on this list with its impressive win streak but its schedule is about to get a lot tougher in a hurry. United will host a rematch against Orlando before playing three straight road games at Sporting Kansas City, DC United and Philadelphia. Sporting KC owns the second-best record in the Western Conference and the potential is there for the travel to take its toll against two of the lesser teams in the Eastern Conference in Philadelphia and DC United. All eyes will be on Atlanta United to see if they can extend their win streak.
Similarly to NYC FC, Atlanta United has been powered by their offense. They also have scored 40 goals on the year, which is tops in Major League Soccer. The slight difference is that they’ve scored 40 in 20 games this season while NYC FC has scored 40 in 21 games – one extra game.
