In our ongoing video blog series on combat sports, analyst Miguel Iturrate placed five bets with his fictitious bank roll, four from the world of MMA and one from the world of boxing.
In the world of boxing, American Deontay Wilder captured the WBC World Heavyweight title from Bermane Stiverne. Wilder came in a favorite at the books, but Wilder’s critics found value in Stiverne as an underdog. Wilder went the distance, showing a full tank of gas and a strong jab to win almost every round with the judges to become the first American heavyweight champion in boxing in eight years.
In the UFC, featherweight Conor McGregor took out Dennis Siver in a fight that propels him to No. 1 contender status. Look for the brash Irishman to get his shot at Jose Aldo and the UFC featherweight title in Las Vegas in May. At lightweight, “Cowboy” Donald Cerrone sealed his status as a cult hero with a win over Benson Henderson on just two weeks notice. Where Cerrone turns up next is anyone’s guess, but look for him to lobby for a fight next month in his home state of Colorado.
