Monday Night Raw Recap: The Kevin Owens Show

Last week on Monday Night Raw, a new WWE Universal Champion was crowned. Triple H hit Seth Rollins with a Pedigree in the middle of the ring, which gave Kevin Owens the opportunity to get the pinfall and become the second-ever Universal Champion. What will the landscape of WWE be during the Kevin Owens Show?

Opening Segment
Mick Foley approached Stephanie McMahon regarding Triple H’s actions last week. Things get a little emotional, and Foley ends up trusting that she had no idea that Triple H was going to screw Seth Rollins over last week.

Kevin Owens Universal Championship Celebration
Kevin Owens, the current and longest-reigning WWE Universal Champion (in second place is Finn Balor at less than a day), is here to celebrate his huge victory last week. As Kevin Owens starts his celebration and tears into the crowd, Seth Rollins storms into the ring to demand answers.

Owens offends Rollins with an insult, so Rollins starts beating on Owens. Stephanie McMahon, panicked, then indefinitely suspends Seth Rollins. Mick Foley immediately reverses that decision. Foley says that on Monday Night Raw, rematches are given out instead of suspensions. So Foley makes a match: Kevin Owens will defend the WWE Universal Championship against Seth Rollins at Clash of the Champions.

Charlotte (w/Dana Brooke) vs. Bayley
A couple weeks ago, Bayley made her Monday Night Raw as the newest member of the red brand’s roster. That night, Bayley challenged Charlotte to a WWE Women’s Championship match but has not gotten an official match yet. However, if she defeats the champion tonight, she is definitely next in line.

Since Charlotte has had some problems with her protege Dana Brooke, she is determined to make Brooke less of a failure. In order to do so, Charlotte gave Dana Brooke a clipboard so she could take notes on Charlotte’s performance tonight.

Dana Brooke tries to help Charlotte, but inevitably messes up instead. After Charlotte runs into Brook near the apron, Bayley hits the Bayley-to-Belly to pin the Raw Women’s Champion. Winner: Bayley

Video Package
There is yet another video package confirming who is coming to the Monday Night Raw Cruiserweight Division. The three confirmed in this video are Mexico’s Gran Metalik, England’s Jack Gallagher, and Japan’s Akira Tozawa.

Bo Dallas vs. Kyle Roberts (Local Talent)
It looks like Bo Dallas has joined Nia Jax and Braun Strowman in the squash match trend. After some modified version of the Cross Rhodes, Dallas quickly puts Roberts away. Winner: Bo Dallas

Chris Jericho vs. Seth Rollins
Earlier tonight, Chris Jericho tried to defend Kevin Owens to Mick Foley, and after calling the GM of Raw a “stupid idiot,” Foley put him in a match against Rollins. This could be the first match of a Seth Rollins face turn, which we have not seen since The Shield faced Evolution.

Seth Rollins counters a clothesline attempt from Chris Jericho to hit an emphatic, and vengeful, Pedigree on the Ayatollah of Rock and Rolla, perhaps sending a message to Triple H. Winner: Seth Rollins

Cesaro vs. Sheamus – Best of Seven Series (Match Three)
Currently, Sheamus is ahead in this series 2-0. In the first match, Sheamus used dirty tactics to steal a victory. In the second match, Cesaro injured his back by hitting the ring post, and Sheamus took advantage to submit him with the cloverleaf. Down by two and competing with a hurt back, Cesaro has the odds stacked against him going into this match. If the Swiss Superman loses tonight, he is going to have to beat Sheamus four consecutive times to win the series.

Sheamus spends the whole match targeting Cesaro’s back, which pays off very well. While the referee asks if Cesaro wants to give up, Sheamus hits Cesaro with a Brogue Kick to pick up the victory. Winner: Sheamus

Series Standing: Sheamus (3) | Cesaro (0)

Enzo Amore & Big Cass vs. The Shining Stars
Before the match, Enzo Amore goes in to “labor,” because its Labor Day. It is a really elaborate way of calling the Shining Stars “sawft,” and the match gets underway.

The Realest Guys seems to have the match won, but Epico rolls up Amore and uses the tights to cheat for the victory. Winners: The Shining Stars

Nia Jax vs. Ann Esposito (Local Talent)
In the second squash match of the night, Nia Jax takes her shot at Ann Esposito, who is friends with Alicia Fox. Esposito actually gets in some kicks and a sleeper hold, but it just angers Jax. After a unique powerslam, Jax continues her run of dominance. Winner: Nia Jax

In-ring Segment
Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson promote their “retirement business” by trying to give the WWE Universe a glimpse at New Day in the future. They bring out the Old Day, and this segment goes on way too long. New Day beats up the Old Day, and move on to face Anderson and Gallows at Clash of Champions.

Darren Young (w/Bob Backlund) vs. Jinder Mahal
Last week, Titus O’Neil destroyed Bob Backlund and Darren Young. Although Young picked up the victory, O’Neil attacked his former partner and laid him out in the ring.

Titus O’Neil tries to distract Young, but Jinder Mahal fails to capitalize with a roll-up. Young hits the Gut Check on Mahal for the victory. Winner: Darren Young

Backstage Segment
Nia Jax finds Alicia Fox backstage and taunts her about destroying her friend earlier tonight. Fox is not having any of Jax’s taunting, and the two get in a shoving match before Jax walks off. It looks like Nia Jax could be done with facing local talent.

Braun Strowman vs. Sin Cara
Sin Cara requested this match after Braun Strowman disrespected the lucha libre culture last week. Strowman faced Americo, and ripped the luchador’s mask off after the match. To honor his culture, he wants to compete against Strowman.

Sin Cara tries to get in the ring after the two fight outside, and Strowman pulls him back out to get the count-out victory. Winner (via count-out): Braun Strowman

In-ring Segment
Sasha Banks announced on Twitter earlier today that she had bad new to announce on Raw. Just before Banks announces her bad news, she is interrupted by Dana Brooke. Brooke looks to take out Banks, but all of a sudden, Brooke gets hit with the Bank Statement. The bad news was for Charlotte, and that at Clash of Champions, Sasha Banks looks to regain the Women’s Championship.

Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens
Since Owens was complaining to Mick Foley about his match against Seth Rollins at Clash of Champions, so he was put in a match tonight against his longtime rival.

Zayn appears to hurt his ankle during the match, and Owens notices immediately. The Universal Champion hits Zayn with a powerbomb to pick up his first victory as champion. Winner: Kevin Owens

After the match, Roman Reigns comes down to the ring and clearly wants a piece of Kevin Owens. Mick Foley notices this and sets up a match for next week: Roman Reigns vs. Kevin Owens. If Reigns wins, the Universal Championship match in three weeks will become a triple threat match.
