Mosquera vs Ellis Odds – GBP is on ESPN with a welterweight 10 rounder pitting undefeated Rashidi Ellis (19-0) against veteran Alberto Mosquera (25-3-2). The bout is the main event of Golden Boy’s event scheduled for the Grand Oasis Arena in Cancun, Mexico this Friday night, check your local listings for start times.
Ellis is the fighter that GBP is featuring here as the 25 year old from Massachusetts hits the road for his first fight in Mexico. In the Panamanian Mosquera, Ellis is facing a fighter who is on a three fight winning streak. Ellis comes from a fighting family and since turning pro back in July of 2013, he has logged just four fights in his home state.
In his last outing this past March, he made short work of Fidel Monterrosa Munoz, a veteran of over fifty fights. The fight took -place in Puerto Rico, a place where Ellis had fought several times before and it took no time for Ellis to show who was boss. He knocked Monterrosa down five times and he earned the official stoppage in the fourth round.
Ellis operates in a loaded weight classes and he is looking to stay undefated and showcase his talents until a title shot materializes. Mosquera faced undefeated prospect Sammy Vasquez earlier in his career and Vasquez stopped him in the opening round. Vasquez continued to win but he faltered on the verge of a world title shot, so a big win over Mosquera is a must for Ellis to continue his progression.
Mosquera vs Ellis Odds and More
Light heavyweight contender Joe Snith Jr (23-2) returns to action after a layoff of close to a year this Saturday in Connecticut as he faces Melvin Russell (11-4-2).
2016 was a stand-out year for Smith Jr, as he notched wins over contender Andrzej Fonfara and legendary Bernard Hopkins to become a contender in the 175 pound weight class.
Unfortunately for Smith, the wins over Hopkins and Fonfara did not translate to an immediate title shot and he was asked to fight Cuban contender Sullivan Barrera In July of 2017. That was a frustrating outing for Smith Jr as h was able to flash his one punch power by flooring Barrera in the opening round. Unfortunately for Smith Jr, the saavy Barrera got up off the canvas and managed his way to a twelve round decision win. Smith was unable to show much beyond a reliance on his big punch.
With all due respect to Melvin Russell, the 39 year old “Romantic Redneck” has faced opposition with a combined record of 73-112-8 over the course of his career so it is clear that the goal here is to get Smith Jr a win. Perhaps Smith Jr will want to get some rounds in as he tries to show boxing beyond his KO delivery. Saturday night will go a long way in answering whether Smith Jr still has shelf life in the 175 pound weight class.
The 9 fight boxing card scheduled for the Mohegan Sun is promoted by Joe DeGuardia and Star Boxing. The card also features a lot of women’s talent as former middleweight world champion Kali Reis and undefeated welterweight prospect Wendy Toussaint are both scheduled to compete in single matches.
