Oubre Jr. didn’t receive any offers from other NBA teams, and the Phoenix Suns opted to keep the small forward for the next two seasons. The 23-year-old now has financial security and will be able to hit free agency again as a 25-year-old.
After arriving in Phoenix in a December trade, Oubre Jr. averaged career highs in points (16.9), field goal percentage (45.3), rebounds (4.9), and assists (1.6) in 40 games (12 starts).
Oubre’s numbers improved since he was promoted to the starting lineup after the All-Star break as he averaged 20.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, and a league-high 2.1 steals. However, Oubre’s campaign was hampered with a thumb injury he suffered in March, and it required a minor procedure.
The Phoenix Suns acquired Ricky Rubio, Aron Baynes, and Dario Saric this summer as they are working on building a stronger squad than the one from last season. With all the talent they have the Suns should easily surpass the miserable 19-63 record they had the last year when they finished the season at the bottom of the Western Conference. It was the franchise’s worst record since its first NBA season in 1968-69.
