NCAA is considering dismantling IARP and eliminating postseason bans

The NCAA Division I Board of Directors is reportedly planning to enact many substantial changes to the infractions procedure during its meeting on Wednesday. The Independent Accountability Review Process (IARP) would be scrapped, and postseason suspensions would be eliminated.

The NCAA’s case against Arizona, which includes many alleged Level I recruiting infractions by the men’s basketball team under Sean Miller, is now being examined by the IARP. Despite the fact that it has been doing so since December 2020, no advancement has been achieved since late May, according to the chronology on the IARP website.

Arizona is being sued for alleged infractions that two of Miller’s assistants, Book Richardson and Mark Phelps, are accused of committing during the 2017–18 season. Richardson was detained by the FBI as part of a bribery investigation in September 2017, and Phelps was suspended by the University of Arizona in February 2019 for, among other things, allegedly assisting former felon Shareef O’Neal with an online course. Nobody knows what would happen to Arizona’s case if the IARP vanished.
