The NCAA Division I board alters the transfer regulations

The Division I Board of Directors voted on Wednesday that student-athletes who transfer will be guaranteed their financial assistance at their new institution through graduation. The board convened online. This modification as well as other transfer rule modifications suggested by the Division I Transformation Committee are meant to give student-athletes and member institutions more insight into the transfer environment for all sports. The new rules take effect right now.

According to new NCAA regulations, any institution that awards scholarships to transfer student-athletes after taking athletics into account must continue to do so until the student has completed all of the requirements for a bachelor’s degree, or until they transfer again or participate in opportunities for professional athletics, whichever comes first.

College athletes from all sports will still be eligible after their initial transfer as long as they tell their previous institutions in writing during the prescribed notification-of-transfer timeframes (as determined by their sport.) The board expanded the requirements for student-athletes seeking urgent eligibility exemptions by putting a stronger emphasis on their welfare.
