Wyoming Cowboys vs. Hawaii Rainbow Warriors Betting Preview

In this Saturday Mountain West game, Hawaii is tabbed as the favorite and the team’s currently giving up 4 points. The Cowboys are also receiving +155 moneyline odds while the Rainbow Warriors are -175. This MWC tilt should provide several decent live betting opportunities, and oddsmakers have determined the over/under (O/U) to be 54 points.

The game’s O/U was set initially at 55.5, but early action has slanted toward the under.

The Cowboys have lost 1.0 unit so far in 2018 and are 1-4 against the spread (ATS). The team has posted an O/U record of 3-1. The Rainbow Warriors have been a pleasant surprise for moneyline bettors this season, gaining 13.1 units. They’re 2-3-1 ATS and the over has hit in four of their games.

The Cowboys are 2-3 straight up (SU), including 0-1 SU against MWC opponents. The Rainbow Warriors are 5-1 SU overall and 2-0 SU in conference play.

The Cowboys are looking to get back in stride after a 34-14 defeat to Boise State last week. Their D allowed the Broncos to pass for 345 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 161 yards and two scores. A.J. Richardson had a productive day for the Broncos in that one with 113 yards and a score on six catches. On the offensive side of the ball, Tyler Vander Waal completed 15-of-25 passes for 214 yards and one touchdown. Nico Evans (141 rushing yards on 12 attempts, one TD) spearheaded the running attack. Raghib Ismail Jr. (five receptions, 66 yards) and Austin Conway (three catches, 22 yards) shared the receiving duties in the defeat.

Hawaii just earned a 44-41 win over San Jose State. The defensive secondary allowed the Spartans to air it out for 451 yards and three touchdowns. Josh Oliver was on a different level for San Jose State, recording 158 yards on eight catches. For Hawaii, Cole McDonald completed 34-of-57 passes for 341 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. McDonald (27 rushing yards on 13 attempts) and Dayton Furuta (39 yards on 12 carries, one TD) handled the running game as John Ursua (13 receptions, 148 yards, three TDs) and JoJo Ward (nine catches, 74 yards) led the Hawaii pass-catchers in the win.

Wyoming’s run the ball on 56.2 percent of its offensive possessions this year while Hawaii has a rush percentage of 43.4 percent. The Cowboys have run for 142 yards per game and have seven touchdowns on the ground this year. The Rainbow Warriors are totaling 145 rushing yards per game (167 in conference) and have eight total rush TDs.

The Cowboys offensive scheme has logged 160 yards per game through the air overall and has three passing scores so far. The Rainbow Warriors have produced a ridiculous 351 pass yards per contest (379.5 against MWC competition) and have 24 total pass TDs.

Wyoming seems to have an advantage in both areas of the defense. The team’s allowed opponents to run for an average of 130 yards and pass for 256 yards per game. The Hawaii defense has allowed 279.3 yards per game to opposing passers and 159.2 yards per game on the ground. The Cowboys are giving up an adjusted net yards per pass attempt (ANY/A) of just 6.42 to opposing QBs, while the Rainbow Warriors have allowed a staggering 8.76 ANY/A.

Passing-wise, Vander Waal is up to 578 yards this season, and has completed 49-of-94 attempts with one passing scores and one interception. Vander Waal’s got a 4.38 adjusted net yards per pass attempt, including 4.92 over the last two outings.

Cole McDonald has managed to complete 132-of-200 passes for 1,827 yards, 19 TDs and one INT for Hawaii. His ANY/A stands at 9.85 for the season and 6.64 across his last two outings.

When these two squads faced each other a year ago, Wyoming knocked off Hawaii by a touchdown 28-21.
