Old Dominion Monarchs vs. Charlotte 49ers Betting Preview

Charlotte is entering this CUSA game as the underdog and is currently receiving 2 points. The Monarchs are also receiving -130 moneyline odds while the 49ers are +110. There should be multiple good in-game betting opportunities for the showdown.

The disappointing Monarchs are down 3.2 units so far and 0-2 against the spread (ATS). The team has posted an O/U record of 1-1. The 49ers have gained 0.0 units for moneyline bettors this season. They’re 1-1 ATS and have an O/U record of 1-0.

The Monarchs are 0-2 straight up (SU), including 0-1 SU against conference opponents. The 49ers are 1-1 SU overall and 0-0 SU in conference play.

The Monarchs fell to FIU 28-20 in a contest where their defense allowed the Golden Panthers to pass for 300 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 189 yards. Shawndarrius Phillips had a productive day for the opposition in that one with 94 rushing yards and a score on 18 attempts. Offensively, the Monarchs completed 19-of-37 passes for 303 yards and two touchdowns. Steven Williams went 11-for-22 for 160 yards and one touchdown while Blake LaRussa completed eight-of-15 for 143 yards and one touchdown. Jeremy Cox (43 rushing yards on 13 attempts) led the ground attack in the loss. Isaiah Harper (four receptions, 36 yards) and Cox (four catches, 24 yards) handled the receiving duties.

Charlotte just dropped a 45-9 game to Appalachian State. The team’s defense allowed the Mountaineers to run for 139 yards on 35 rush attempts, along with one rushing TD. Corey Sutton torched the defense, recording 155 yards and two touchdowns on three catches for Appalachian State. For Charlotte, Chris Reynolds completed 12-of-22 passes for 108 yards and one interception. Hasaan Klugh (23 rushing yards on 10 attempts) spearheaded the ground attack in the defeat while Victor Tucker (four receptions, 33 yards) and Benny LeMay (three catches, 26 yards) led the pass-catching corps.

Old Dominion has run the ball on 48.2 percent of its offensive possessions this year while Charlotte has an overall rush percentage of 66.7 percent. The Monarchs have run for 111 yards/game and have one touchdown via handoffs this year. The Niners are totaling 158 rushing yards per game and have two total rush TDs.

It appears that the Niners should have an advantage when it comes to RB effectiveness. Their backfield has logged 3.5 yards per carry while their defense is allowing a YPC of 2.5 to opponents. The Monarchs have registered 3.4 yards per carry while allowing 4.8 yards per rush attempt to opponents.

The Monarchs offensive scheme has tallied 238 yards per contest in the air overall and has two passing TD so far. The Niners have produced 188 pass yards per contest and have just one pass scores.

Defensively, Old Dominion has allowed opponents to run for an average of 214 yards and throw for 327 yards per game. The Charlotte defense has given up 295.5 yards per game to opposing passers and 65.0 yards per game to opposing runners. The Niners are allowing an adjusted net yards per pass attempt (ANY/A) of 8.87 to opposing QBs, while the Monarchs have given up a staggering 10.50 ANY/A.

Passing-wise, Williams is up to 160 yards this season. The signal-caller has connected on 50 percent of his 22 attempts with one passing scores and has yet to throw an interception. He has a 7.65 adjusted net yards per pass attempt overall, although that number is 5.81 over the past two games.

Look for a balanced attack offensively from Old Dominion in this one. Jonathan Duhart (150 receiving yards, two receiving touchdowns on the year), Jeremy Cox (43 rush yards, 24 receiving yards) and Steven Williams (32 rush yards, 0 receiving yards) have each played significant roles recently.

Chris Reynolds has completed 12-of-22 passes for 108 yards, zero TDs and one INT for Charlotte. His ANY/A stands at a very poor 1.56 for the season and 6.13 over his past two outings.

Benny LeMay (35 rushing yards, 26 receiving yards this season), Victor Tucker (33 receiving yards) and Workpeh Kofa (35 receiving yards) have combined for 534 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns over the last two games.

When these two schools met last year, Old Dominion won by two field goals 6-0.
