South Region Best Games

No. 8 Colorado vs. No. 9 UConn

On one side, we’ve got a stable of guards that can go get buckets at any given time for a program that has a history of breakthrough March performances that seemingly come out of nowhere. On the other side, we’ve got one of the country’s toughest frontlines and a team that can score in bunches thanks to their outside shooting. Can UConn turn the Buffs over, something that has been CU’s biggest weakness all year? Can the Buffs attack the offensive glass like they did against Arizona, collecting a whopping 25 offensive rebounds?

No. 4 California vs. No. 13 Hawai’i

As good as the Bears have been the last month or so, this is actually quite a tough draw for them. Hawai’i just rolled through their conference tournament, knocking off LBSU and reminding people of the team that pushed Oklahoma down to the wire earlier this season on the island. Both teams have dynamic guards, but the key will be whether or not Jaylen Brown can shut down the Warriors’ conference player of the year, Stefan Jankovic.

No. 11 Wichita State vs. No. 11 Vanderbilt

Two inclusions into the tournament that took some by a bit of surprise, though perhaps they shouldn’t have at the end of the day. This may just be the best play-in game we’ve ever had, and either team will provide quite the challenge to Arizona in the next round. Both teams have guards that can, as the kids say, go. Can the Commodores get Damian Jones going underneath? That’s the key to this one.

No. 5 Maryland vs. No. 12 South Dakota State

There’s always one No. 12-seed ready to spoil everyone’s bracket, and SDSU has been here before a few times, like when they pushed Baylor just five years ago late in the game when the Bears had one of their most talented rosters in the past decade. Maryland hasn’t exactly played their best basketball as of late, though they did look to have turned a bit of a corner in their narrow loss to Michigan State the other day in the Big Ten semifinals. If Melo Trimble shows up, the Terps should be fine. But if not…this could get dicey.
