New York Mets Take First Game Against Brewers

After losing six out of the last seven games, the New York Mets won the first of a three-game homestand with the Milwaukee Brewers.

In the top of the first, Milwaukee’s Chris Carter knocked his 13th homerun to put the Brewers ahead 2 – 0. The Mets started to fight back in the bottom of the second when Neil Walker crossed the plate. In the bottom of the sixth, the Mets took the lead 2 – 1 when Michael Conforto hit his seventh homerun of the year over the left field wall. Asdrubal Cabrera scored.

Steven Matz, who was 5-0 with a 1.09 ERA in his last 5 starts, took to the mound and came home with the victory, making his overall record 6 – 1. He is now 10-1 through his first 13 starts and, according to Elias Sports Bureau, the only other left-handed pitcher to win nine of his first 12 major league games was Kazuhisa Ishii in 2002 (10-1). Matz is also the first pitcher in Mets history to win nine of his first 10 major league decisions. Can he pitch every game? Nah, I know.

Jeurys Familia came in to wrap up the win for the Mets, who had 7 hits on the board to the Brewers 3. Familia is now 14-for-14 in save opportunities and is tied for second in the majors in saves. Seven of his last 10 outings, he’s retired every batter he’s faced. Ah-maz-ing.

The Mets strikeouts were still in double digits, with Curtis Granderson, Michael Conforto, Eric Campbell, and Neil Walker all struck out twice. Sixteen Mets were left on base, but what they did was enough to put a notch in the win column.

New York will play nine of its next 12 games at Citi Field. The Mets are now 11-8 at home this season and have 56 home runs through their first 40 games, which is the most in team history after 40 games. Overall, the Mets lead the National League and rank third in the majors with 56 homers. The Mets are 18-7 when they hit a home run, but they really need to pick up their play on the road.

In other news, The Mets coach Terry Collins says that he hasn’t quite decided when Matt Harvey will pitch again. “In this particular case, we really think he’s got to get back on the horse as fast as we possibly can,” Collins said. “We’ve got to get him back out there. He’s angry about some things. Get him back out there, that’s how we’re going to go about it.”

On Saturday, the New York Mets will send Jacob deGrom to the mound to face the Brewers’ Zach Davies. The right-handed deGrom has already pitched against the Brewers four times, given up a total of four runs, going 3-1 with a 1.38 ERA. Today, deGrom is 3-1 with a 2.50 ERA and 23 strikeouts.

Davis is a right-handed pitchers with a 1-3 record and a 5.58 ERA. His last time out, Davies had a 6-1/3 start with a two-run outing against the Padres.

The game will start at 4:15pm at Citifield. Want to see a game? The Mets scored 19 runs from May 9-15 in Los Angeles and Colorado, so fans can now save 19% on tickets.
