NFL News: A.J. McCarron, Keke Coutee Will be Out a While and More

Vinatieri Colts

Anyone hoping for a speedy return of Houston Texans back up quarterback A.J. McCarron and wide receiver Keke Coutee will be disappointed.

According to head coach Bill O’Brien, neither man will be suiting up soon. Coutee is dealing with an ankle injury and McCarron is nursing an injured thumb.

When asked when the players could return, O’Brien was blunt, “Tomorrow? No. A week from now? Probably not. And so we’ll just keep playing it by ear.”

While McCarron should ideally never see the field if all goes well for Houston, Coutee was set up to be a real contributor to the offense. As a rookie out of Texas Tech last season, Coutee caught 28 passes for 287 yards and one touchdown in six game appearances and two starts.

His teammate, DeAndre Hopkins, has been singing his praises at training camp calling him the offense’s most improved player.

McCarron spent last season with the Oakland Raiders, appearing in two games. In his career, he’s got a 2-1 record as a starter, completed 64 percent of his passes for 928 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. He has one playoff start, a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers while with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2015.

In other Texans news, the team will help AAF veteran Tracy Sprinkle’s pro football journey continue. The team signed Sprinkle, who spent some of the preseason with the Carolina Panthers, Saturday. They cut linebacker Chris Landrum.

Houston activated DeAndre Carter from the PuP list.
