NFL News: Bengals Extend Tyler Boyd, Redskins Cut Mason Foster

It’s a good day to be Tyler Boyd’s financial planner. The fourth-year wide receiver and the Cincinnati Bengals reached an agreement on a four-year, $43 million contract extension, keeping him in the fold through the 2023 season. Boyd, who was entering the final year of his rookie contract, gets a raise from the $1.03 million he was due to make to $11.3 million.

Cincinnati selected Boyd in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Pittsburgh. He didn’t become a full-time starter until last season, but flourished in the role. He caught 76 passes for 1,028 yards and seven touchdowns. As new head coach Zac Taylor opens up the offense, the Bengals were right to get this contract done early before Boyd starts putting up his expected 2019 numbers.

Could this show a shift in Owner/General Manager Mike Brown’s handling of the team? Sure, he’s paid a handful of his players over the past few years, but his penny-pinching ways have let plenty of good draft picks and all-timers walk. Has Brown finally figured out how to run an NFL team? He did fire Marv Lewis and hire Zac Taylor. There’s reason for Bengals fans to hope.

Brown will show his negotiation and talent-keeping chops with Boyd’s fellow receiver A.J. Green, who is entering the final year of his current contract.

Redskins part ways with Mason Foster

In a move that opens up $4 million in salary cap space, the Washington Redskins have cut linebacker Mason Foster. Earlier in the offseason, before the draft, the Redskins had Foster on the trading block hoping to get a third-round pick. That never materialized.

It’s an odd move for Washington, considering they were already linebacker poor after losing Reuben Foster to a torn ACL back in May. They did add Montez Sweat in the first round of April’s draft out of Mississippi State. They must really like what he’s shown them so far.

Also, you know, Foster verbally badmouthed the team and its fanbase last year. That might have something to do with it too.

Foster is entering his ninth year in the league. He started all 16 games for the Redskins in 2018, recording 131 tackles, four for a loss, one sack, two fumble recoveries, four passes defended and two interceptions. He should have no trouble landing a job with another team.
