NFL News: Colts Add Brian Hoyer, Joe Haden Gets Extension

Brian Hoyer Colts

Brian Hoyer barely got to dust the pet hair off his couch before his phone rang. The quarterback-needy Indianapolis Colts wasted no time in adding the New England Patriots cast-off, bringing in Hoyer on a three-year, $12 million contract with $9 million in guaranteed cash.

Hoyer will back up presumptive starter Jacoby Brissett. Brissett is in the final year of his rookie contract and is due to make $2.025 million this season. That means the starter is being paid significantly less than his back up, who’s averaging $4 million a year.

Brissett, though, can’t be too concerned about that. Regardless of how the rest of us feel, he’s probably pretty pumped at the chance at proving everyone (including me) wrong about his franchise quarterback potential. If Brissett gets it done, he’ll have a monster check to cash next season, regardless of who it may be with.

This is Hoyer’s seventh team in the NFL since he was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State in 2009. He appeared in five games with the Pats last season, completed 1-of-2 passes for seven yards. He’s 16-21 as a starter in the  league with a career 59.3 completion percentage, 48 touchdowns and 30 interceptions.

Joe Haden gets extension from Steelers

Three seasons ago, cornerback Joe Haden was rescued from an abysmal Cleveland Browns team in a trade that’s worked out for everybody. The Browns got the cap space, fired general managers and coaches and are on their way to relevance now. Haden got to go to the Steelers, make the playoffs and still get paid.

Late Saturday, Haden and Pittsburgh agreed on a two-year, $22 million extension. He will now be locked up with the Steelers through the 20201 season.

Haden was originally a No. 7 overall pick by the Browns in the 2010 NFL Draft out of Florida. Last year he started 15 games, recording 63 tackles, two for a loss, one forced fumble, 12 passes defended and two interceptions.
