NFL News: Derwin James Has Stress Fracture, Avery Williamson Out for Season

Brian Hoyer Colts

Derwin James stepped right off the field at Florida State and became an All Pro and Pro Bowler for the Los Angeles Chargers as a rookie. For a while at least, he won’t be stepping anywhere. James suffered a stress fracture in his foot, specifically of his fifth metatarsal and will miss a while.

The team has no timetable for his return, though the injury shouldn’t be season ending. Los Angeles hasn’t ruled out a surgical repair.

Last season James recorded 105 tackles, four for a loss, 3.5 sacks, 13 passes defended and three interceptions. He was the No. 17 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Avery Williamson tears ACL

New York Jets linebacker Avery Williamson was lost for the season after tearing his ACL in Thursday’s preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Williams had an MRI Friday morning that confirmed the tear. The linebacker joined the Jets last season as a free agent. He began his career with the Tennessee Titans as a fifth round selection in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Last year Williamson had 120 tackles, six for a loss, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, six passes defended and one pick.

Tavon Young’s neck injury could cost him the season

Tavon Young’s neck injury suffered in Thursday night’s preseason game against the Green Bay Packers is apparently serious enough he could be done for the year.

“Tavon (Young) has a more serious issue than we thought. He has a neck issue,” head coach Jim Harbaugh said. “The doctors can explain it but it’s a disc issue so that’s a serious injury. He could be out for the remainder of the season. We’ll know soon but it doesn’t look good for Tavon.”

Young started six games last season and played in 11. He posted 37 tackles, five for a loss, three fumble recovered, two defensive touchdowns, five passes defended and one interception.
