Coaxing Bruce Arians out of retirement and the broadcast booth has paid off for Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht. Saturday, the team announced they’d handed Licht a five-year extension that will keep him the GM through the 2023 season.
Licht was the vice president of player personnel when Arians joined up with the Arizona Cardinals in 2013. That led to multiple playoff seasons and an appearance in the NFC Championship in the 2015-16 season.

The GM hasn’t had it so good in Tampa Bay. He was hired after Lovie Smith and was stuck with him for two years, then elevated offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and that was a disaster. The Bucs brass must really feel Arians can right the ship, otherwise Licht would be polishing his resume, not cashing a fat check.
Derwin James to miss three months
If we’re lucky, Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James will get to suit up by Thanksgiving. The star second-year player out of Florida State will need surgery to repair the stress fracture in his fifth metatarsal, costing him the next three months in recovery.

James injured the foot against the Arizona Cardinals in L.A.’s preseason opener.
Last season, the 2018 No. 17 overall pick was named an All Pro and made the Pro Bowl. He accounted for 105 tackles, four for a loss, 3.5 sacks, 13 passes defended and three interceptions.
Josh McCown is back
Evidently the hammock Josh McCown was relaxing in wasn’t so comfortable after all. The quarterback, who retired after his 15th season back in the summer has changed his tune. He’ll be carrying a Microsoft Surface tablet for the Philadelphia Eagles on a one-year, $2 million deal this season.
Josh McCown, who announced his retirement this summer to spend more time with family, is returning to play his 17th NFL season with the Eagles, per sources.
McCown is signing a 1-year deal with the but plans to resume his broadcasting career with ESPN after season, per source.

The Eagles have been hurting at back up quarterback after Nate Sudfeld went down with a broken wrist last week. Cody Kessler is now in the concussion protocol, and with starter Carson Wentz’s injury history, the team could take no chances. McCown had signed up as an analyst with ESPN, but now that will have to wait.
