After a 10-year career where he started all but four games (all in his rookie season) Detroit Lions free safety Glover Quin is calling it a career. Quin announced his decision on his Instagram page Tuesday.

He expounded on his decision in a text message to ESPN.
“Playing professional sports was always a dream of mine,” Quin said in the texts. “Football was the route I chose and God blessed me to be able to persevere through all the hardships and play 10 years in the NFL. I’m so thankful for the opportunity I had to play in the NFL with such great players and two great organizations.”
Quin spent his entire career with the Houston Texans and Detroit Lions. The Texans originally drafted Quin out of the University of New Mexico in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Quin started 12 games as a rookie and was never again out of the Texans or Lions starting line up in his 10-year career.

Quin joined Detroit as a free agent in 2013. He made one Pro Bowl and led the league in interceptions with seven in 2014. He wraps up his career with 740 tackles, 25 for a loss, four sacks, 84 passes defended, 10 forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, 24 interceptions and a total of five defensive touchdowns. The Lions released the veteran safety in February.
“Football was never who I was as a person,” Quin told ESPN. “It was always what I had done. I wanted to use football as a stepping stone into the rest of my life and not let football be my life. I always only wanted to play 10 years. Said if I was able to walk off the field after the last game in Year 10, it would be really hard for me to walk back on. I’m young, I’m healthy and I got a lot of life to live. So I’m walking away from the game of football.”
