Perhaps after seeing two of his key players carted out of the game, Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia might finally learn that maybe it’s not smart to play starters in meaningless exhibition games. The Detroit Lions lost linebacker Jarrad Davis and center Frank Ragnow against the Buffalo Bills on Friday night.
If you’re keeping track, that’s two high draft picks and key starters and they both required carts to leave the field. It was a bad night for Detroit in a season that was already going to be an uphill battle to even be relevant.
And now add Lions’ guard Frank Ragnow to the list as he is carried off with a right leg injury…. https://t.co/sgS0AH3gcm

While people can complain about the length of the preseason, it’s up to these coaches to determine if starters play at all and how long. Patricia didn’t protect his players.
The Bills took a hit too, losing left guard Quinton Spain and cornerback Tre’Davious White.
Gabbert goes down for the Buccaneers
Now this one, at least, can’t be blamed on the head coach. Blaine Gabbert is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers back-up quarterback and has every reason to be in a preseason game, running the offense and fighting for his job. Still, Gabbert left the field with a dislocated shoulder in Friday night’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

Gabbert’s injury opens the door for third-stringer Ryan Griffin, who took over when the former Jacksonville Jaguars first round pick went down.
