NFL News: No End in Sight for Melvin Gordon Holdout, More Baker and Jones

There appears to be no urge to budge from the Los Angeles Chargers and no desire to risk his body for running back Melvin Gordon. Because of that, the team and player are currently at a stalemate that could reportedly go into the regular season.

In case you weren’t keeping track, that’s just a little more than two weeks away.

Gordon is in the final year of his rookie contract and set to make $5.6 million this season. He’s after money in the Le’Veon Bell range, just like Ezekiel Elliott with the Dallas Cowboys. Unlike the Cowboys, the Chargers don’t seem anywhere near interested in paying that.

What Los Angeles has reportedly offered Gordon is a $10 million a year deal and don’t seem to have any desire to add to it. The Pro Bowl running back turned it down flat.

If the Chargers don’t blink, and they’re showing no indication of any ocular discomfort at all, he’ll have to report this season to accrue the final year of his contract and become a free agent next season. This is probably the gambit now on both sides I’m guessing, with Gordon likely just looking to skip training camp at this point.

Last year Gordon rushed 175 times for 885 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging 5.1 yards per carry. He caught 50 passes for 490 yards and four scores.

Baker Mayfield texts Daniel Jones to clear the air

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield wasn’t content to openly scoff at his “misquote” in GQ, about New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, he felt the need to make it right.

During the quote fiasco, Mayfield reached out to his fellow quarterback via text message.

Jones texted Mayfield back, “No worries.”

Mayfield was just bummed about the whole thing. His brand always comes off as arrogant, but this was a little much even for him.

“To me that came back on my character,” Mayfield said. “That’s one thing that, I don’t care about a lot of opinions of if you like me or not, but that looked like my character was way out of line, so that’s the only reason I addressed it. …That’s the type of thing that frustrates me because it was taken out of context and on top of that now we’re talking about something that’s not about the Browns. To me, that’s the biggest thing.”
