First, Baker Mayfield talked smack about Daniel Jones in GQ Magazine. Of course, things would play out exactly as they did on Sunday during week three of the NFL.
Indeed, Jones looked like a star quarterback for the New York Giants in his first official regular season action. Then on Sunday Night Football in front of his home Cleveland crowd, Mayfield left much to be desired. Therefore, the Cleveland Browns lost the game 20-13 to the Los Angeles Rams.
While Mayfield only threw one interception, better play from him could have been enough to upset the Rams on Sunday night. Instead, the Browns sit at 1-2 after a lackluster performance by Mayfield. Moreover, he completed 50 percent of his passes (18 of 36) for 195 yards; with one touchdown and the aforementioned interception.
Now, Rex Ryan is fired up about Mayfield on ESPN’s ‘Get Up’ show. Have a look at this clip:

The former NFL head coach didn’t mix words in talking about Mayfield.
“If I’m the offensive coordinator and I have Odell Beckham, Jarvis Landry, Nick Chubb, and Baker Mayfield…. yeah I know he’s overrated as Hell.”
Quickly, Ryan was cut off by co-host Pat McAfee before continuing on the subject. However, he seemed to excuse Mayfield’s play a little bit; pointing towards Cleveland’s lack of talent at the tackle position.
“Here’s what is stopping this team though. You have no tackles. And so are you going to make an adjustment, or are you just going to let them get beat one-on-one?”
However, co-host Mike Greenberg asks Ryan to double-down; asking if he really feels the Oklahoma product leading the Browns is truly overrated. In true Rex Ryan fashion, he didn’t backtrack.
“Absolutely. I bought into the dang hype, but not to the point where everyone is saying he’s going to be the league MVP. What’s he doing right? Right now, he’s a guy who is a one-read guy; and then he improvises.”
Without question, the Cleveland Browns entered 2019 with the highest expectations for the franchise in a number of decades. Simply – if Mayfield continues to flounder – he will have more prominent detractors than that of Rex Ryan.
Truly, that’s life in the NFL as a starting quarterback. Especially when you are a vocal and loud personality like Mayfield has been.
Through the first three games of 2019, Mayfield has thrown three touchdowns to five interceptions. All of this goes along with a 56.9 completion percentage and porous 70.3 QB rating. That rating is good for a bottom-five ranking of active qualified passers in the sport right now.
