NFL News: Ryan Kalil Unretires, Phil Dawson Doesn’t and More

Carli Lloyd NFL

After 12 seasons, two-time All Pro center Ryan Kalil decided to call it a career after the 2018 season, but a summer sitting on his couch made him change his mind. Thursday, the five-time Pro Bowler decided to return to the NFL, signing a one-year contract with the New York Jets.

The deal is worth $8.4 million. Kalil spent his entire career with the Carolina Panthers up to this point after the drafted him in the second round of the 2007 draft out of USC. He’ll slide right into the starting center position that was in utter shambles with the Jets. None of the three men on their depth chart were even drafted.

Prospective starter, Jonotthan Harrison, was a 2017 UDFA. His back up, Jon Toth, was a 2018 UDFA. The third guy on the chart, Ryan Anderson, was signed off the street this offseason after going undrafted.

Phil Dawson has kicked his last NFL field goal

After 21 years of booting field goals and extra points, Phil Dawson is hanging up his spurs. Dawson spent the majority of his career with the Cleveland Browns after joining the team as an undrafted free agent out of Texas in 1999.

Dawson moved on to the San Francisco 49ers in 2013 and finished up his career with two seasons as an Arizona Cardinal. Dawson wraps up his NFL tenure with an 83.3 field goal percentage and a 97.6 extra point percentage.

LeSean McCoy off the hook in bar fight

For whatever reason, the NFL is deciding to keep its nose out of LeSean McCoy’s off-the-field business. McCoy was “connected” to a bar fight with an off-duty cop. A fight that has required McCoy to pony up $55,000 to said cop.

The NFL has decided that’s enough and will not punish the Buffalo Bills running back.

Last season McCoy started 13 games and played in 14, putting up some of the worst numbers of his career. The two-time All Pro gained 514 yards on 161 carries with three touchdowns. He caught 34 passes for 238 yards.
