When you add a successful former first round pick to your quarterback room, it’s going to raise some eyebrows and some questions. Such is the case for the Tennessee Titans, who acquired former Miami Dolphins starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill in a trade, supposedly to back up their own former first round pick, Marcus Mariota.
Tannehill, when healthy, has been a solid NFL starter and potential franchise guy. But that was the problem, he could not stay healthy. The former Texas A&M quarterback hasn’t played a complete season since 2015. He was 42-46 as a starter with a career 62.8 completion percentage, 123 touchdowns and 75 picks.
Mariota is 27-28 as a starter with a career 63.2 completion percentage, 69 touchdowns and 42 interceptions. He’s been good at times, even great, but there have been enough holes in his performances to justify looking over his shoulder. Head coach Mike Vrabel isn’t doing a lot to tamper down that feeling, even as he was assuring reporters Tannehill was the back up.
“His (Tannehill’s) job as a backup, everybody’s job as a backup, is to push the guy in front of him,” Vrabel told reporters. “To compete and try to make yourself better and try to make the team better and see how everybody responds.”
Tannehill has never been a back up since he joined the league in 2012.
