NFL News: Troy Aikman Upset With Comparison To Patrick Mahomes

While just 20 games into his NFL career, Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes is unlike any superstar the league has seen in several decades. Without question, the human highlight reel at signal caller in Kansas City is setting league records seemingly by the week. Thus far in 2019, Mahomes has continued where he left off in 2018 after winning the league MVP. Through three games, Mahomes has his team undefeated; and has thrown ten touchdowns to no interceptions. Furthermore, he’s thrown for 1,195 yards which averages to almost 400 yards through the air per game.

Indeed, Mahomes seems unstoppable. However, don’t go comparing him to former Dallas Cowboy Troy Aikman.

The situation emerged on social media when Aikman responded to an article by The Athletic that pointed out Mahomes’ gaudy numbers. By comparison, Mahomes has thrown 36 percent of Aikman’s career touchdown passes in only eight percent of the amount of games.

First, Aikman scrolled his timeline and saw the tweet by The Athletic. Then, Aikman decided to respond and did so rather harshly.

The current FOX analyst tweeted the following:

“Talk to me when he has 33 percent of my Super Bowl titles.”

And wow, mic drop. Simply, there are a few ways of looking at this. Without question, Troy Aikman was a phenomenal quarterback who played in the league when the game was different. Remember, the Cowboys focal point of their attack wasn’t throwing it every down like Mahomes and the Chiefs. For example, Aikman played with Emmitt Smith who is the NFL’s all-time leading rusher.

While Mahomes is asked to put points on the board in an era where defense isn’t played the same  -and offensive philosophies have changed at the collegiate level – Aikman was asked to be smart and accurate and make a few big deep throws a game. And as Aikman points out, he did so to the tune of three championships.

Truly, this is comparing apples to oranges if you’re trying to say who is better. For example, are you really able to answer who is better between Tom Brady and Joe Montana? It’s not as easy as one might think if you watched Joe Montana play. The easiest way to answer either debate is to admit that all these players are all-time greats, and Mahomes is well on his way to joining that elite circle.

Finally, in your opinion if you’re starting a team today; do you want Aikman in his prime leading the way? Or would you opt for Patrick Mahomes? Let us know in the comments section below.
