The National Football League is constantly evolving and with it the best general managers in the league are forced to adapt. While there are plenty of rising talents around the league there is a core group of veteran GM’s that have mastered the ability to keep their rosters well stocked in an era where the salary cap makes that task more difficult than at any other time in the NFL’s history. We ranked those top GM’s that have truly established themselves as the best of the best. Here is a list of the NFL’s best general managers right now.
Bill Belichick, New England Patriots
Belichick is technically the head coach of the Patriots but no one person within the organization is more responsible for the construction of the roster than he is. Over the years, Belichick has shown a willingness to make bold moves while building a perennial championship contender that has advanced to eight Super Bowls and won five of them. No GM in the league has been as successful as Belichick over the past two decades. There is no doubt BB deserves his place at the top of this list.
Howie Roseman, Philadelphia Eagles
Roseman’s roster is responsible for beating Belichick’s roster with its backup quarterback in the most recent Super Bowl. While he doesn’t have the same overall track record as BB, Roseman has certainly proven himself as one of the elite GM’s in the NFL. Roseman inherited a roster in transition when he took over for Chip Kelly in late 2015 but quickly turned it in to a Super Bowl champion with the trade to land the pick to select franchise quarterback Carson Wentz in the draft and the addition of wide receiver Alshon Jeffery among others. The Eagles appear primed to contend for Super Bowls in the NFC for years to come thanks to the incredible job that Roseman has done.
Kevin Colbert, Pittsburgh Steelers
It wasn’t that long ago that Colbert was criticized heavily in Pittsburgh after his team posted back-to-back 8-8 seasons in 2014. However, the Steelers have thrived over the past few years as one of the AFC’s top teams with a roster that has been reloaded with talent including Antonio Brown, David DeCastro, T.J. watt, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Ali Villanueva. Colbert’s rosters have a 188-99-1 record since he first arrived in 2000 including a couple of Super Bowl wins. That is more than good enough for Colbert to earn a spot on this list.
Thomas Dimitroff, Atlanta Falcons
Dimitroff built a roster that registered six 10-win seasons in 10 years before 2013. After a couple of down years, the Falcons have turned things around again under Dimitroff over the last couple of seasons. Atlanta nearly won the Super Bowl a couple of years ago and then fell just six points shy of reaching the NFC Championship game last season. With a well-stocked roster on both sides of the football, the Falcons appear primed to contend for Super Bowls for years to come. That’s why they’re one of the favorites to win the NFC, according to BetDSI.
Rick Spielman, Minnesota Vikings
With Baltimore Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome set to step down, Spielman is poised to take the final spot on this list as a top-five GM in this league. The Vikings went to the NFC Championship game last season with Case Keenum as their quarterback following injuries to Sam Bradford and Teddy Bridgewater. This offseason, Spielman added Kirk Cousins with a three-year, $84 million deal to help put this team over the top. Minnesota is loaded on both sides of the football and primed to be a legitimate contender in the NFC moving forward. Spielman has done an excellent job building his roster up. He deserves recognition as one of the best GM’s in the NFL.
