NXT Recap: Bobby Roode, #1 Contender

Last week on NXT, we had four qualifying matches to determine who would compete in a fatal four-way match which would decide the #1 Contender for Shinsuke Nakamura’s NXT Championship. Tonight, we have the fatal four-way match between Roderick Strong, Andrade “Cien” Almas, Bobby Roode, and Tye Dillinger. We also have a singles match where Daria Berenato tries to get some revenge on either Billie Kay or Peyton Royce.

Billie Kay (w/Peyton Royce) vs. Daria Berenato
A couple weeks ago, Daria Berenato teamed up with Billie Kay and Peyton Royce in a six-woman tag team match against Ember Moon, Aliyah, and Liv Morgan. During the match, Berenato would essentially be a sacrificial lamb who would be the only legal person in the match, losing the match so Kay and Royce could say they didn’t lost the match. Since they didn’t care about Berenato’s safety, the former MMA fighter looks to get back at them.

Billie Kay tries to retreat, but Berenato chases her and throws her back in the ring. While the referee is distracted with Kay, Peyton Royce interferes and slams Berenato into the ring apron. Billie Kay takes advantage to hit a big boot on Beranato and to steal the victory. Winner: Billie Kay

After the match, Billie Kay and Peyton Royce continue their quest to put the entire NXT women’s division on notice, especially Asuka. Asuka has been asking for more competition, so Kay and Royce look to give it to her (they won’t).

Backstage Segment
Asuka responds to the comments made by Billie Kay and Peyton Royce, and the NXT Women’s Champion says that they are no competition at all for her (they aren’t). Her interview is interrupted (and ended) by Nikki Cross of SAnitY just staring at her, possibly with the NXT Women’s Championship in her sights.

The Authors of Pain (w/Paul Ellering) vs. Local Tag Team
The winners of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic dominate their opponents, and the match does not end as planned. The Authors of Pain powerbomb one of their opponents onto the other, and the one who took the brunt of the impact ended up with a concussion, since his partner landed right on his head. Result (via referee stoppage): No Contest

After the match, Paul Ellering grabs a microphone and says that whether it is DIY or The Revival, The Authors of Pain are on the hunt for the NXT Tag Team Championships.

Bobby Roode vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas vs. Tye Dillinger vs. Roderick Strong – #1 Contender’s Elimination Match (NXT Championship)
All four qualifying matches for this #1 Contender’s match took place last week. Bobby Roode defeated Oney Lorcan, Andrade “Cien” Almas defeated No Way Jose, Roderick Strong defeated Elias Samson, and Tye Dillinger defeated Eric Young.

All four of these men have a ton of experience, but Tye Dillinger is the only person to have a lengthy NXT career under his belt. Bobby Roode spent years in TNA, capturing their Tag Team and World Heavyweight Championships. Andrade “Cien” Almas competed in CMLL, the oldest wrestling promotion in the world today. Roderick Strong spent several years in the independent scene, specifically in companies like Ring of Honor and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG). While all of these men have plenty of experience under their belts, being the #1 Contender for the NXT Championship could do wonders for their careers.

Andrade “Cien” Almas hits Tye Dillinger with the running knees in the corner, and while Almas drags Dillinger to the center of the ring, Roderick Strong takes advantage to nail Almas with a running kick. for the first elimination of the match. This could have potentially saved Tye Dillinger from being eliminated. Eliminated: Andrade “Cien” Almas

This decision to take out Almas would backfire on Strong, since Tye Dillinger had time to regroup. Dillinger takes advantage of the situation and hits Roderick Strong with the Tye Breaker for the second elimination of the match, leaving Dillinger left with his former Dusty Rhodes Classic tag team partner and NXT TakeOver: Toronto opponent, Bobby Roode. Eliminated: Roderick Strong

Dillinger fails to put Bobby Roode away with the Tye Breaker, and Roode eventually hits the elevated DDT on the Perfect 10 to become the #1 Contender, penciling his name into the main event of NXT TakeOver: San Antonio. Winner, and NEW #1 Contender: Bobby Roode
