Odds on Eli Manning Getting Benched in 2017

Eli Manning

The last time the New York Giants were this bad was 2003. That next year, they bullied their way into acquiring Eli Manning from the San Diego Chargers during the NFL Draft.

In Week 10 of the 2004 season, Manning made his first career start for the Giants, and he’s been starting under center every week since.

Fast forward through a decade of success that includes two Super Bowl championships, and the G-Men are currently 1-8 following a 51-17 drubbing at the hands of the Los Angeles Rams in Week 9. This has prompted Ben McAdoo to at least consider the idea of sitting Manning down to see what rookie Davis Webb can offer.

“That includes everybody,” McAdoo said when asked if he would consider making a change at the quarterback position along with a number of other positions.

Like his brother before him, Manning is known for being a gamer and wanting to be on the field no matter the situation. He’s started 207 consecutive games, and he would prefer to continue that streak for the duration of his career. But at 36 years old with a $5 million roster bonus coming to him and a cap hit of $22 million next season, it’s a wonder if it’s time for the Giants to cut bait with their franchise quarterback and try to either race to the bottom or rebuild. It’s clear that this isn’t a team that is winning the Super Bowl any time in the near future, and Manning’s contract is just one of many on the roster that needs to be restructured or torn to pieces.

Webb, meanwhile, was a third-round pick out of Cal and was thought of as a potential quarterback of the future. Considering the fact that the Giants seem destined to get one of the top picks in the NFL Draft next year, they probably want to know what they have in Webb to determine if they should be targeting a quarterback in the Spring.

Furthermore, by starting Webb, the Giants are going to ultimately find themselves in more positions to lose games, something that will only help them attain the highest pick possible in the 2018 NFL Draft.

“We estimate Eli is worth 5-6 points to the betting line,” said BetDSI.eu spokesman Jacob Crossman. “However, that assumes Geno Smith would be coming in to replace Manning. If Webb starts, expect to see the G-Men lined as double-digit underdogs against most of the teams on the back end of their schedule.

On Monday, BetDSI.eu posted odds as to whether Manning will start every game for the remainder of the 2017 season. The oddsmakers don’t believe a changing of the guard is in the cards as he is a favorite to start all 16 games at -160.
