In a match up against a former Big 12 foe, the Sooners got just enough from their star and more than enough from everyone else, meaning Oklahoma advances to the Elite Eight next weekend to take on the winner of Oregon and Duke later tonight.
Buddy Hield and Jordan Woodward did most of the heavy lifting for Lon Kruger’s team, combining for 39 points, but it may have been the collective effort of the Sooners on the glass that sealed the deal. With Texas A&M’s size, and Oklahoma’s lack of it, the Aggies had a clear goal of hitting the offensive glass and pounding the ball inside. However, Oklahoma had five players grab four or more rebounds, including 10 from Hield.
Whether they face Oregon or Duke, it’s reasonable to expect Oklahoma to be favored over either. The Sooners have the best remaining player in the tournament and, for much of the year, had people believing that they just might be the best team in the country.
With a Final Four berth on the line, they’ll finally have a chance to prove their belonging and further the fantastic career of Buddy Hield, working towards the true story book ending.
