No. 1 North Carolina vs. Temple
While we’re not expecting the Owls to necessarily put a scare into Carolina, everyone will be watching to see how Roy Williams accounts for the absence of point guard Marcus Paige. The Tar Heels may roll out a committee at the lead guard spot, or lean on versatile veterans. No one should be overly concerned if it takes the UNC perimeter time to figure things out, so long as the interior plays as well as they’re capable of. If they do, the Heels should roll.
Prediction: North Carolina 83, Temple 62.
No. 7 Iowa State vs. Colorado
The Cyclones may be breaking in a new coach, but they’re up against a Buffaloes squad with questions to answer as well. Point guard Monte Morris should have little problem matching up with whoever the Buffs throw his way, while Georges Niang looks poised to have a big night against a defensive squad unsure of themselves on the perimeter. The key for ISU will be staying out of foul trouble given the new defensive rules focus by the officials, and limiting Josh Scott’s effectiveness underneath.
Prediction: Iowa State 76, Colorado 62
No. 9 Gonzaga vs. Pittsburgh
There’s not a more well rounded frontcourt in the country than what Gonzaga will put on the floor Friday night. Of course, there are plenty of questions surrounding their perimeter. Can the Panthers use their physicality to stifle the young Zags guards? That’s the biggest key heading into this matchup, as well as figuring out whether or not Pitt can score the ball enough to keep up with Mark Few’s potent offense. Ultimately, I’m going with the more talented group here.
Prediction: Gonzaga 84, Pittsburgh 71
